Upcoming: Snarkitecture / Daniel Arsham – “The Beach” @ Sydney Festival

For this year’s Sydney Festival, Cofounders Alex Mustonen and Daniel Arsham from Snarkitechture will be bringing their The Beach installation (see last year) back at the The Cutaway at Bangaroo Reserve. The 60m x 23m ball pit may be the world’s largest and will feature 1.1 million balls this time, an ocean of monochromatic fun for visitors to dive into. Head over here for more information. Thomas Canto recently introduced his latest big project, the Illusory Perspectives installation at Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. This large installation continues his series of futuristic aesthetics-oriented works which combine urban and geometrical elements in an eclectic abstract form. Mixing painted patterns with actual objects and a grid of both lines and threads installed in the space, the French artist creates a multidimensional work that plays with observers’ perspectives. Currently at Deitch Projects in New York through December 23rd, Ai Weiwei has an immersive installation on view entitled Laundromat. Continuing to address the refugee crisis in Europe, the Chinese artist (once a refugee himself) has filled the large space with garments, shoes, and personal effects that he acquired from the refugee camps housing Syrian immigrants near the border of Greece, along with snippets of media coverage and photos he took. If the Art Basel Miami Beach (covered) is considered the main event every year during Basel Week Miami, then NADA Miami Beach is certainly the much-awaited encore (Art Basel typically opens on Weds to VIPs and NADA opens the next morning on Thurs.). The Bogota and Los Angeles-based Fabien Castanier Gallery used Basel Week Miami as an opportunity to show their roster of urban artists to the art-thirsty crowd in Wynwood with a popup exhibition. Displayed in two large spaces in the vibrant neighborhood, the exhibition also served as a teaser of what they will are planning for their upcoming Miami gallery location scheduled to open next year. Basel Week Miami ’16: Juxtapoz Clubhouse

One of the venues jam-packed with goodness during Basel Week Miami was the Juxtapoz Clubhouse, a special project in conjunction between the magazine and Mana Urban Arts Project. The immersive artist retreat and exhibition space in the Wynwood District features collaborations with different artists, galleries and creatives. Currently at Basel Week Miami, Tim Biskup (featured) has created an immersive art installation in the form of a bar, dancehall, and art gallery. Called The Dog. (1306 North Miami Ave), the space will be open through Saturday night with the schedule of events and RSVP information here. The bar, dancehall, and art gallery rolled into one will feature site-specific work from the Southern California-basd artist outside and inside the space with artwork and editions available for those interested.
