Video/Armory Week ’11 – David Ellis Wins Pulse New York 2011 Prize

Over the weekend, members of the Pulse Prize selection committee made the exciting announcement that this year’s Pulse Prize would be awarded to David Ellis. Ellis—represented by the Joshua Liner Gallery in the fair’s Impulse solo project section—exhibited a varied collection of sculpture, video and installation, including True Value (Paint Fukette), an animatronic assembly of paint buckets orchestrated to create a complex drum beat. Last Wednesday 2 March saw the opening of the Slinkachu solo exhibition, Concrete Ocean (initially mentioned by us in January), at London’s Andipa Gallery. There was a refreshingly mixed crowd in attendance, with a number of the regular faces at East End shows having dusted off their passports and made the trek over to Knightsbridge. To the gallery’s credit, the complimentary bar never ran out of alcohol, which helped maintain a cheerful atmosphere throughout the evening. As for the art itself, guest reception was enthusiastic. This past Saturday saw the opening of Gardar Eide Einarsson’s second exhibition with Honor Fraser. The politically rebellious artist’s show included minimalist black & white artwork using found objects and appropriated imagery. The main piece of the show consisted of a installation of rubber car tires and casts of sharpened bamboo sticks. Meant to recreate and recontextualize the makeshift street barricades found in Thailand, the piece references ’60s installations and happenings, such as Allan Kaprow’s Yard. Osgemeos – “Slava’s Head” for The Moulin / Dépayz’arts

It looks like Osgemeos has hooked up with The Moulin again for another project, this time to fashion Slava’s head out of a trailer. The character is taken of the famous Russian clown show – Slava’s SnowShow, which is also the subject of an animation that the Brazilian duo are working on (shown here previously). As they did at Art Basel Switzerland, Hauser & Wirth brought some spectacular Paul McCarthy pieces to share with the Art Basel Miami Beach attendees. Luckily, they also exhibited works by other artists in their esteemed program, including Louise Bourgeois, Martin Creed, Subodh Gupta, Mary Heilmann, Roni Horn, Bharti Kher, John McCracken, Joan Mitchell, Roman Signer and Monika Sosnowska. Rei Sato – “Peter & The Wolf” Installation for Works & Process @ Guggenheim

This weekend will see the premiere of this year’s “Works & Process” at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC. The annual project brings together a creative mixture of the visual and performing arts for a limited series of performances. This year’s feature will be Sergei Prokofiev’s children’s classic Peter & The Wolf.
