Openings: Slinkachu – ‘Concrete Ocean’ @ Andipa Gallery

Last Wednesday 2 March saw the opening of the Slinkachu solo exhibition, Concrete Ocean (initially mentioned by us in January), at London’s Andipa Gallery. There was a refreshingly mixed crowd in attendance, with a number of the regular faces at East End shows having dusted off their passports and made the trek over to Knightsbridge. To the gallery’s credit, the complimentary bar never ran out of alcohol, which helped maintain a cheerful atmosphere throughout the evening. As for the art itself, guest reception was enthusiastic. […]

Showing: Stik – ‘Single’ @ Subway Gallery

Stik’s simple portrayal of super-flat characters in the realms of the street has been effectively used to portray a variety of emotions in those few simple lines, addressing such issues and themes as race, homelessness, poverty, acceptance and belonging. When it comes to an unconventional artist like Stik, how does his work translate into a gallery setting? Perhaps the first thing to consider is an unconventional gallery space. Single is Stik’s current solo show in the underground location of Subway Gallery, located in London’s Edgware Road. The […]

Openings: Titi Freak @ OneThirty3, Newcastle

Titi Freak was back into installation mode in the UK last week for his showing with OneThirty3 up in Newcastle. The premise of the space is simple – bring over an exciting roster of artists to rip it up in Hush’s studio space so that they can replicate their street aesthetic indoors. Titi Freak was the first artist invited over to make his site specific installation. Organised and curated by Hush and his wife Rachael, the warehouse studio space of OneThirty3 provides artists the freedom to […]

Openings: Gardar Eide Einarsson – “Power Under Construction” @ Honor Fraser

This past Saturday saw the opening of Gardar Eide Einarsson’s second exhibition with Honor Fraser.  The politically rebellious artist’s show included minimalist black & white artwork using found objects and appropriated imagery.  The main piece of the show consisted of a installation of rubber car tires and casts of sharpened bamboo sticks.  Meant to recreate and recontextualize the makeshift street barricades found in Thailand, the piece references ’60s installations and happenings, such as Allan Kaprow’s Yard. See more of it and the rest of the […]

Osgemeos – “Slava’s Head” for The Moulin / Dépayz’arts

It looks like Osgemeos has hooked up with The Moulin again for another project, this time to fashion Slava’s head out of a trailer. The character is taken of the famous Russian clown show – Slava’s SnowShow, which is also the subject of an animation that the Brazilian duo are working on (shown here previously).  The installation will be part of a project called “Dépayz’arts“, held between Dec 27th-31st, with some of the best theater, dance, music, installation and street theatre groups including of course, […]

Anish Kapoor, arguably the most famous sculptor alive, recently returned to India for his first solo exhibition split between Delhi at the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Mehboob Studios in Mumbai, the city where he was born. The thirty year retrospective, which is somewhat of a homecoming 40 years later for Kapoor who left the country when he was 17, features many of his most famous works like the pigment pieces, the distorted mirrors, and shooting into the corner. Take a look at […]

The well-curated booth was a treat to visit and view.  See the works for yourself after the jump…
