Installation: Barry McGee @ SFMoMA – A Closer Look

After visiting Mike Shine’s outdoor carnival for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary, AM ducked inside to catch one last look at Barry McGee’s massive clustered installation (previewed).  Consisting of hundreds of drawings, personal pictures and patented patterns, McGee’s exhibit truly conveyed the multi-faceted breadth of his works.  Arranged in a seemingly haphazard, though obviously well thought out manner, Twist’s install was literally bulging at the seams, seemingly so that one would assume it was on the cusp of giving birth or expelling a whole new body of […]

Installation: Barry McGee @ SFMOMA 75th Anniversary Exhibiton

We recently took you to Mike Shine’s studio where he was getting ready for this weekend’s show at SFMOMA, but he’s not the only artist who was working on an exhibition there. Barry McGee was also installing some works in preparation for the 75th anniversary show at SFMOMA, where they have championed Mission School artists like Mr. Twist over the years.  Other artists featured include Bruce Conner, Jay DeFeo, Frida Kahlo, Jeff Koons, Sherrie Levine, Mike Mandel, Larry Sultan, Jackson Pollock, Leslie Shows and more. Teaser: Mark Jenkins – “Meaning is Overrated” @ Carmichael Gallery

Mark Jenkins, who recently did some work in Moscow, will be returning to the States for a show at the Carmichael Gallery. He’ll be bringing in some fresh installation art like the “Spokes” piece seen above for his show entitled “Meaning is Overrated.”  Definitely mark down January 21st and plan to attend the opening as he will be showing with another great artist – Aakash Nihalani. Discuss Mark Jenkins here.

Teaser: Mike Shine @ SF MoMA

Following his recent recreations of his historic Art Shack at Art Basel Miami and the Museum of Craft and Folk Art earlier this year, Mike Shine starts off 2010 proper with yet another installation, this time at the prestigious SF MoMA.  Debuting on the eve of their 75th Anniversary Show, the “Mike Shine Show” will run from January 16th to the 17th.  Mike recently sent us a couple photos of the mural he’s working on, see the second process pic after the jump.

Video: Dzine @ Bass Museum of Art

Vernissage TV was on hand to document one of the shows we enjoyed during our visit to Miami for Art Basel Week. As we previously mentioned, Chicago- based artist Dzine brought his sculptures, paintings and installations for an exhibition at the Bass Museum of Art with a custom chandelier and “ghost bike” being some of the standout pieces. Take a look as he walks through and explains his work. Discuss Art Basel week here.

Showing: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Hanging Out In The Museum” @ Taipei Fine Arts Museum

Currently showing at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum is a major exhibition from gunpowder artist extraordinaire Cai Guo Qiang. As you can see in the video above, Qiang demonstrated his explosive technique by creating some of his signature pieces (also seen in the “Stages” show) in person. Far from a one trick pony, Qiang brings with him a body of work similar to what we witnessed at the Guggenheim in New York last year with his “hanging car” installation, “headlong rush of wolves” installation, “sunken […]

Basel Week Miami ’09: Aqua Fair

This year’s Basel Week Miami wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Aqua Art Miami fair in the Wynwood district. Chock full of visual goodies from galleries we know and love to some newly discovered ones that are now on the AM radar. It was treat to experience some great art at this fair. Check out all the images including several pieces from Jin Young Yu (interviewed & seen above) after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’09: Pulse Fair

Sometimes, it takes stepping out of your comfort zone to get a fresh perspective on the way one views art. That is what Pulse did for us in Miami. From the moment we entered the fair, we noticed many galleries and artists that we weren’t accustomed to viewing. We constantly found ourselves stopping and asking more questions about “what is that?” and “who made it?” than any other fair during Art Basel Week. A truly rewarding experience. Check out all the visual nuggets we dug up after […]

Openings: Sickboy – “Logopop” @ The Rag Factory

UK artist Sickboy opened up his “Logopop” show yesterday in London at The Rag Factory. Along with new paintings and limited edition releases, the Bristol native also had immersive site-specific installations. Although known for his temple icon imagery, Sickboy also explored other aspects of his work with this show that are decidely his own. More images after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’09 – TrustoCorp

In addition to the multitudes of already established and successful street artists working Primary Flight this year, AM managed to score a couple hours with the ever mysterious TrustoCorp as the enigmatic entity bolted up their trusty brand of altered and hand painted street signage. Following a successful blanketing of New York City’s financial district, TrustoCorp trucked down to Miami leaving a trail of subversive signs in their wake.  From what TrustoCorp told us, expect a pretty intense nationwide campaign to come to a city […]
