Streets: JR x Daniel Arsham (NYC)

It’s always interesting to watch artists work on collaborations as they try to meld their different techniques and imagery together in a coherent fashion. One of the more successful artists in doing this is street artist and photographer JR (see his joint ventures with Vhils, Os Gemeos, André, Liu Bolin, and José Parlá in the past). The latest artist to work with the French photograffeur is NY-based sculptor Daniel Arsham featuring JR’s famous eye pasted inside Arsham’s sculptural elements. Discuss JR here. Openings: Mario Testino @ Prism

The Academy Awards were scheduled for Sunday, but on Saturday night, the stars came out to help celebrate Mario Testino’s opening reception for his exhibition at Prism in West Hollywood. Many of the photographer’s friends that are known for being immortalized in front of his camera came out in support of the legendary artist. They included Kim Kardashian, Pamela Anderson, Alessandra Ambrosio, Liberty Ross, Stephen Dorff, Irina Shayk, Jared Leto, Whitney Cummings, and many other beautiful women and men. On the walls were massive, bold, […]

Streets: Slinkachu (London)

Recently, street sculptor & photographer Slinkachu was asked to participate 20 Years of War Child, a new exhibition celebrating 20 years of the charity’s (War Child) work. He created three installations that he staged in various parts of London, the results of which will be put on display at The British Music Experience through March 28th. Take a look at the other pieces below along with shots from different perspectives below… Discuss Slinkachu here.

Preview: Mario Testino @ Prism

Prism brings another international star to its West Hollywood gallery as Mario Testino shows there for the very first time. This also marks his first  solo exhibition in the US after being away for seven years. The show will include works that span the photographer’s career and include people as well as landscapes. Testino’s images oftentimes become as iconic and memorable as those he shoots and this survey will show just how great a history he has had behind the lens. The exhibition will run […]

Openings: JR @ Watarium Museum (Tokyo)

We recently gave you a sneak peek at French “photograffeur” JR as he worked feverishly to set up his first solo museum exhibition at Tokyo’s Watari Musuem of Contemporary Art. This past weekend, the show opened to a enthusiastic reception by the people in Japan. Highlighting his Inside Out project, which incorporated the residents from North East Japan (where the tsunami hit in March 2011), JR went big as he always does and wheat-pasted the exterior facade of the museum. On the inside, we saw a diverse […]

Preview / Setup: JR @ Watarium Museum (Tokyo)

If you remember, late last year, we shared with you some photos of JR touring Japan to spread his Inside Out love in his giant photo booth / converted truck. Turns out, that was only a precursor for a show opening officially this weekend at the Watarium Museum in Tokyo. As you can see from these preview images, the French “photograffeur” is already busy prepping the outside and inside of the institution with his distinctive work. Photos via Alabaz and the artist. Showing: Liu Bolin – “Hiding In The City” @ Galerie Paris-Beijing (Paris)

Currently showing the Paris branch of Galerie Paris-Beijing is Liu Bolin’s Hiding In The City featuring new examples of the Chinese artist’s signature technique of painting himself to blend in with the background. Last time we spent time with the “Invisible Man” was while he was in New York working on a complex collab (here & here) with French artist JR as well as unveiling a solo show at Eli Klein (covered) last year so it’s nice to see some new work.  You should too if you are in Paris before the show closes […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Paul Kasmin Gallery @ Art Basel

Another booth we enjoyed at the main fair this year during Basel Week Miami was the work on display from Paul Kasmin Gallery featuring an eclectic mix of artists like Ivan Navarro (above), Kenny Scharf, Walton Ford, David LaChapelle, Erik Parker, and more. In particular, we enjoyed the special section from Navarro which included a set of optical illusion-based works from the Impenetrable series (made from fluorescent lights, resin, mirror) that mesmerized viewers as they peered down into the “depths.” Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Ryan McGinley Photographs Daria Werbowy for W Magazine

Photographer Ryan McGinley, whose video Varuo will make it into NYC taxis starting this week, continues to be linked with fashion shoots featuring supermodels – this time with Daria Werbowy. The latest set of pics for a feature entitled Earth Angel were taken for W Magazine, whom the NY-based photog famously worked with Kate Moss for back in 2007. Others McGinley has shot in the past includes the likes of Sienna Miller and Karlie Kloss, but we are sure there will be more in the future as his […]

Streets: Slinkachu (Russia)

It appears cold weather hasn’t deterred the skills and intentions of street miniaturist Slinkachu. The London-based artist continues to hit up major metropolitan areas around the world (the theme of his last solo show) – this time in Gorky Park (Moscow, Russia). Looks like his tiny people sculptures should watch out for giants aka humans. Discuss Slinkachu here.
