Upcoming: José & Rey Parlá – “U.T.O.P.I.A.” @ colette

On September 3rd, the Parlá Brothers (José & Rey) will be presenting a new show in Paris at colette entitled U.T.O.P.I.A. The Brooklyn-based artists will be presenting a collaborative effort with José’s specialty being drawing and painting, while Rey is known for his photographs. It will be interesting to see how they plan to fuse their two artistic repertoires in this new body of work. Discuss José Parlá here.

Streets: JR – Williamsburg (New York)

Yesterday, street photograffeur JR (featured) spent the day creating a fresh mural in Brooklyn. The large building located at 338 Berry St. was in a prime spot overlooking the Williamsburg bridge and its oncoming traffic. Utilizing his signature photography and large-scale wheatpasted handiwork, the French artist made sure to give everyone in the area something to look at. Presented by Chanel in the old Deitch Projects location, the pop up show featured the portraiture of renowned photographer Karl Lagerfeld and his work with the fashion label. Streets: Spencer Tunick (Munich Opera Festival)

American photographer Spencer Tunick, known for organizing large-scale public nude photoshoots, has struck again – this time in Germany. The human installation created from 1,700 individuals marked the start of Munich’s 2012 opera season by gathering in formations recalling scenes from Richard Wagner’s opera Der Ring Des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung). This week’s Art Focus is on Belgian photographer Frieke Janssen. Among her many projects, one in particular is titled simply Smoking Kids, which was inspired after seeing a YouTube video of a chainsmoking Indonesian toddler. Last week, Known Gallery presented the exhibition titled Sketchy M%#herfuckers featuring artwork by 7th Letter writer RIME and artist KC which showed currently with Dabs Myla’s Break Night Lovers (covered).
