Releases / Signings: Lisa Yuskavage – “The Brood” Book

Tonight (7pm) at Strand Books in New York, Lisa Yuskavage will be launching her comprehensive new monograph – The Brood. Released through David Zwirner Books, whose associated gallery she showed at back in June (covered), the 242 page hardcover features work from 1991 – 2015. Those interested in the gothic surreal imagery of Esao Andrews might want to get their hands on a copy of Contrast Magazine. The latest issue features a nice full color cover with one of the Los Angeles-based artist’s reoccurring images, various iterations of a ghostly ship. Inside the Hawaii-based publication you will find a nice spread of Andrews’ work along with a lengthy interview. Baby Tattooville ’15: Secret Store

Always one of the things attendees look forward to, Baby Tattooville’s Secret Store opened last night at 9pm sharp. Prints, originals, publications, and other art products from this year’s participating artists (Anthony Ausgang, Sas Christian, Olivia De Berardinis, Ron English, Camille Rose Garcia, Bosko Hrnjak, Marion Peck, KRK Ryden, Mark Ryden, and Isabel Samaras) were made available to each customer in the order of their specific numbers, with the people with most seniority having first dibs on purchases. For those of you who liked the massive painting James Jean (interviewed) sent to the Masterworks show in Long Beach (covered) and the monster Adrift piece he created earlier this year, you are in luck. Psychedelic Space is the soon to be released book from Kelsey Brookes from Gingko Press that explores his last three years of work. The 216 page hardcover documents his more recent paintings, spanning four solo shows, the explosive patterns that are his artistic vision of molecular structures of the psychedelic nature. Tran Nguyen Smithsonian Magazine Cover

Tran Nguyen, whose work we last enjoyed in person up in Seattle (covered), recently worked on a cover for Smithsonian Magazine. The current issue, which we took a snap of at our local Barnes & Noble, features the artist’s illustration for the story of the fall and rise and fall of Pompeii, referencing the fact of how the archeological treasures are falling into a state of scandalous decline. 1xRun recently teamed up with Roger Gastman to create an extensive monograph for one of the most legendary LA writers and graffiti icon RISK (interviewed). The Detroit-based publisher released these 350 page hardcover books on July 17th, coming either with a limited edition print or original artwork. The book itself covers the story of Risk, from the very early 80s to the present day. After Melbourne, LA and NY, the next show on Søren Solkær‘s Surface world tour opened Friday June 12th at Øksnehallen in Copenhagen. The exhibition in his hometown is the largest on the world tour, covering a 3,500 square meter area, which provided a great setting for a major street art related event. Exhibiting in such large space enabled Solkær to produce and show 122 portraits of world’s leading street artist in super large formats. Just closing over the weekend at the SFAQ [Project] Space, the gallery space of the magazine, was a show entitled Highlights From Past SFAQ [Projects] 2012–2015. The title of the exhibition speaks for itself – artists who have collaborated with the publication before on pullouts or inserts have these projects on display along with an artwork that corresponds to it. James Jean: Xenograph Preorder & Fundraiser

James Jean (interviewed) recently announced the preorder for his next book entitled Xenograph. Documenting his work from 2010 to 2014, the monograph will pick up where REBUS left off and also features images of his exquisite pen and ink drawings from his sketchbook. Funds raised for the first printing will go toward the cost of self-publishing for the first time, giving Jean more control over the process.
