Openings: “anthro(physis)” @ Rivera Gallery

Over the weekend, Rivera Gallery unveiled a truly impressive exhibit titled anthro(physis), a show which fused in very interesting ways a variety of artwork ranging from sculpture to paintings. At the core of the show, the theme connecting the artwork explored the issues of nature & environment and how art can re-interpret these issues in different ways. The show featured nine artists from around the world including Néle Azevedo, Vaughn Bell, Robert Cannon, Aharon Gluska, Claire Morgan, Robert Standish, Jason deClaires Taylor, Levi van Veluw […]

Frieze Art Fair 2011: Highlights (Part II)

Following our earlier coverage of London’s Frieze Art Fair, AM made a return visit before it closed last weekend to spend a few more hours considering the curation and presentation of exhibitor booths along with the individual works on display. See more commentary and additional photos of what caught our eye after the jump. By way of advance notice, in more traditional working environments, a couple of images (especially in the gallery section) would probably be deemed NSFW. So don’t blame us if a colleague […]

Preview: Jeremy Fish & Kenichi Yokono – “Rise of the Underground” @ Mark Moore

At the end of the month in Los Angeles, the Mark Moore Gallery will play host to two artists whose work at first glance have nothing much in common, but when you consider their use of woodworking and the surreal imagery, you begin to see the reason for the pairing. For Rise of the Underground, Jeremy Fish (featured) will be presenting his perfectly cut silhouette paintings featuring his animal characters using some unique modes of transportation (sometimes being the transportation themselves). Showing jointly alongside Fish […]

Frieze ’11: Highlights (Part I)

As Frieze Art Fair drew to a close last Sunday, featuring over 170 of the most exciting contemporary art galleries in the world, we have picked up some of our favorite in no particular order: Mary and Child sculpture entitled the Milk of Human Weakness by Jake and Dinos Chapman (previously covered) at White Cube Gallery. Mark Ryden’s painting at Kasmin Gallery. Marc Quinn’s fingerprint painting at Gallerie Theaddeus Ropac. Ryan McGinley pictures at Alison Jacques Gallery. Realistic installations from Nordic duo Elmgreen & Dragset, with Galerie […]

Previews: TrustoCorp – “Life Cycle” @ Opera Gallery (New York)

After a productive summer that saw a range of compelling street art interventions, including the Drive Thru Liposuction Station, faux tabloid magazines, mock reality TV ad disruptions, Hollywood Walk of Shame, as well as a series of their signature simulated signage, TrustoCorp will again move their work indoors for a followup New York gallery show to last year’s successful debut exhibition, An Overt Display of Mischief and Mayhem. Opening Thursday, October 20th, the Brooklyn-based collective will this time target the walls of Opera Gallery with their […]

Frieze ’11: Overview

London’s Frieze week kicked off properly on Wednesday 12 October with the preview for Frieze Art Fair in Regent’s Park. AM has long been a Frieze enthusiast. The calibre of its exhibitors and their booths makes most other contemporary art fairs look provincial in comparison. Conscious of the international spotlight, the big fish bring out the big guns and do whatever else they can to retain their dominance, while the ambitious smaller galleries pull out the stops to try raising the bar even higher for […]

Frieze ’11: White Cube Gallery

The recent opening of a third gallery space in London confirms White Cube ongoing strength, and its presence at the Frieze Art Fair is nothing less than spectacular. The booth features some impressive works by the gallery’s roster of artists such as Jake and Dinos Chapman, Marc Quinn, Damien Hirst, Andreas Gursky, and Tracey Emin to name a few. In particular, what caught our eye included The Chapman brothers presenting a controversial version of Mary and Child entitled the Milk of Human Weakness, while the bronze […]

PULSE Los Angeles ’11: LeBasse Projects

Another pitstop for the AM crew several weeks ago as we walked PULSE Los Angeles was the booth housing the offerings from LeBasse Projects. For their part in the art fair, the gallery brought with them paintings from Nate Frizzell (interviewed), Katrin Fridriks, and Joshua Petker as well as some sculptures. Take a look at more photos taken for us by Carlos Gonzalez after the jump…

Art Platform ’11: Ai Weiwei

As we walked out the elevators last week to head into the main exhibition hall for Art Platform, something caught out attention in the side atrium. Imagine our surprise and delight as our eyes laid on Ai Weiwei’s Snake Bag, one of his most moving and intriguing works. The undulating 55 feet long serpent is created from 360 children’s backpacks and commemorates the deadly 2008 Sichuan earthquake. When the artist – activist saw the scattered backpacks in the rubble left by the thousands of children […]

Openings: Michael Murphy – “Look” @ Gallery Nine 5

It’s been a while since we caught up with Michael Murphy with the last time being when he was one of the artists quarterbacking Manifest Hope in DC alongside Shepard Fairey. We recently attended his opening at New York’s Gallery Nine 5, witnessing the multi-talented artist work his magic on a number of mediums and can say this show didn’t disappoint. We saw classic works such as the his layered silhouette & wire sculptures to newer techniques that incorporated either sound, textures or light into […]
