Showing: “Takashi Murakami In Wonderland” @ Perrotin Gallery (Shanghai)

Last week, Takashi Murakami In Wonderland opened at Perrotin Gallery’s Shanghai location, the Japanese artist’s first solo in China. For his largest gallery show to date in Asia, the Superflat movement founder has chosen to focus on the evolution of his signature “Mr. DOB” character who he states is used as a self-portrait after 20 years of history together. Ranging from single-panel canvases to a large 15-meter-long acrylic painting mounted on an aluminum frame, as well as a monumental 250 cm sculpture, the body of work […]

Showing: Emily Mae Smith & Genesis Belanger – “A Strange Relative” @ Perrotin Gallery (New York)

A couple weekends ago, the New York branch of Perrotin Gallery opened a joint exhibition from Emily Mae Smith & Genesis Belanger. A Strange Relative features an intriguing pairing of paintings by Smith and sculptures by Belanger, an amazingly cohesive showing that can be taken as a conversation between the two Brooklyn-based artists. Much attention to detail can be seen in this surreal collaboration, especially in the placement of objects that mirror the imagery in the canvases – an example (seen below) of which is Smith’s take […]

Showing: “Mickey: The True Original” Exhibition (New York)

As we mentioned a couple days ago, the Mickey: The True Original Exhibition has opened in New York, celebrating the 90th birthday of one of the most iconic cartoon characters in history. The show is filled with photo-ops, including an amazing piece (seen above) from Daniel Arsham inspired by Thru the Mirror, a Mickey Mouse cartoon short film from 1936 and a Mickey Mouse-themed Cosmic Cavern from Kenny Scharf. The immersive 16,000 square-foot exhibition will be on view through February 10th so add it to your art-going itinerary now. […]

Previews: Tauba Auerbach – “A Broken Stream” @ Paula Cooper Gallery

Tonight at Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, Tauba Auerbach will be returning to open a show entitled Broken Stream featuring video, sculpture, drawing and painting. Despite the diverse range of techniques and mark-making, the New York-based artist’s work is always rooted in the way mathematics and physics, and science intersect with art. Anchoring the new exhibition are two beautiful installations centering on her work with glass, one with rods mirroring the helices and waves seen in nature and one seen through freestanding lenses flanking either side. Rounding out the […]

Releases: James Jean – “90th Anniversary Mickey & Minnie Mouse Sculpture Set”

Tomorrow (November 10) between 11am-1pm, James Jean (interviewed) will be signing and releasing the Mickey & Minnie Mouse limited edition sculpture set at BAIT Los Angeles to celebrate the 90th birthday of the two Disney cartoons. Created with Good Smile Company, the project transforms the two iconic characters into porcelain succulents frozen in time, shedding and regrowing petals after decades of constant evolution. Produced in an edition of 500, with a $1500 price tag for each set, these figures can also be purchased online here along with a blind box figure set […]

First Look: KAWS – “GONE” @ Skarstedt Gallery

With the public opening of the heavily anticipated exhibition from KAWS set for tomorrow in NYC, here is a first look at what will be on display at Skarstedt Gallery. GONE features new abstracted paintings that at this point only subtly references the XX and iconic cartoonish characters that used to figure so prominently in the Brookyn-based artist’s work. These vibrantly colored compositions are paired nicely with four new large-scale bronze sculptures ranging from the familiar repositioned (like his head down Chum or smaller Companion sitting on a pedestal) […]

Showing: Todd Schorr – “Atomic Cocktail” @ Virginia MOCA

Showing through the end of the year at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, Atomic Cocktail from Todd Schorr (featured) is an expansive new exhibition featuring iconic paintings pulled from various collections, new works that have never been shown to the public, sculpture, and preparatory studies. Drawing from influences ranging from artists Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, and Salvador Dali, as well as the early animated cartoons of Walt Disney and Max Fleischer, underground comics best exemplified by Zap, and classic films from the 1930’s such as King Kong […]

Showing: Geoff McFetridge – “Coming Back Is Half The Trip” @ Eighteen Gallery

Last weekend in Copenhagen, Eighteen Gallery hosted the the opening of another great show – Geoff McFetridge’s Coming Back Is Half The Trip. The Los Angeles-based illustrator, designer and artist’s instantly recognizable distillation of the human form into basic shapes and colors once again takes center stage for this exhibition, work that takes inspiration from daily routines and patterns. This time around, McFetridege has nicely paired his paintings with some sculptural works (his take on the animal form), arranged head-to-tail in the center of the space as would be indicated […]

Previews: Jean Jullien – “GIB” @ Arsham/Fieg Gallery

Tonight at the Arsham/Fieg Gallery inside KITH’s SoHo store in New York City, Jean Jullien will be presenting a solo with an interesting concept. GIB which is “BIG” spelled backwards, will be on display through November 18. Via Hypebeast.

Releases: Lu Pingyuan – “Look! I’m Picasso!” Figure

We first noticed the works of Lu Pingyuan at this year’s Art Basel HK (covered), where he successfully introduced his Look! I’m Picasso! body of work. Half a year later, the Chinese artist has created a limited edition figure of one of the characters from the series, which will be available soon. The entire series was inspired by a single scene from the Toy Story movie in which Mr. Potatohead ends up with his features all twisted and says “Look! I’m Picasso!” This particular line triggered Pingyuan to think about the […]
