Previews: Amy Sol – “Bird of Flux” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Tomorrow night (March 3rd), Amy Sol (interviewed) returns to Thinkspace after an interval of almost two years (see 2016) for the opening of her latest solo show. Bird of Flux looks to be a more introspective body of work featuring the Nevada-based artist’s female characters and their animal companions in mainly melancholic twilight and night settings, which is also reflected in her choice of a more muted palette. Rounding out the exhibition will be her first forays into sculpture, bringing her imagery to life in 3D form. […]

Kazuhiro Tsuji – Mark Ryden Sculpture

Continuing his uncanny ability to capture the human form with his artistic touch, Kazuhiro Tsuji recently revealed his newest sculpture at the Copro Gallery booth during the LA Art Show. Joining a series of works from the Japanese sculptor that has included famed artists like Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, and Robert Crumb is a larger-than-life head of the legendary Mark Ryden. Perched precariously on a big eye, perhaps a referencing one of the key features of the lowbrow luminary’s work, is a mind-blowingingly accurate replication […]

Five years since his last, and inaugural exhibition, with Cheim & Read, Barry Mcgee opened his latest solo last week at the New York gallery. For this large showcase the American artist transported everything from his San Francisco studio that “resonates” for him, as he has describes it. A large, floor to ceiling stack of vintage surfboards dominates […]

As one of the most gifted living Australian sculptors, Mueck almost exclusively creates smaller or larger than life-size pieces. Judging from the stunning result of these skulls being housed in the 17th to 18th Century European Paintings Gallery, we think […]

Releases: Pejac – “Desprestigio”

Pejac recently announced his first ever sculptural edition based on a piece that was exhibited earlier this year at his A Forest show in Venice (covered). For this release, the Spanish artist created a complex production process that involved different techniques and mediums, challenging both himself personally and the idea of an editioned art piece. Desprestigio is his commentary on the catastrophic consequences of the sinking of oil tanker MV Prestige in November 2002 in Galicia, Spain. The spill polluted thousands of kilometers of coastline and more than one […]
