Art Focus: Fabien Mérelle

Last month at Art Stage Singapore (covered), our attention was drawn to photos of this exquisite sculpture from French artist Fabien Mérelle shown at the Edouard Malingue Gallery booth). The piece entitled Pentateuque features a man bearing the weight of the world on his shoulders (in the form of an elephant), a translation of a drawing by the same artist into a three-dimensional form. AM recently stopped by San Francisco to visit Guerrero Gallery and caught the setup by Remio & Tim Diet as they prepared for their opening this Saturday. First up is Remio, known as a great writer around the world (part of both Barry McGee’s DFW/THR and Os Gemeos’ VLOK crew), bringing a impactful show entitled Man In Transition. Openings: DZINE – “Victory” @ Dallas Contemporary

Chicago-based artist DZINE has recently opened another stunning museum exhibition, this time at the Dallas Contemporary. The show entitled Victory features an impressive selection of new pieces from all the medium’s DZINE is known for, including large-scale mandala paintings, tricked-out cars, ornate chandeliers and other installations. Together, the collection of works leads viewers to examine the human desires for success and recognition, through the lens of the artist’s Puerto Rican background. Victory is on view until March 31. Currently showing through April 28th at the me Collectors Room in Berlin is a show entitled WONDERFUL – Humboldt, Krokodil & Polke. Following directly on from our studio visit with John Bocksel leading up to Curio‘s Sea Of Blasphemy group exhibition opening on 26th January, filmmaker Jarcob Arden McClure just finished this video profile of artist Bill McRight, who is also participating in the grouping along with Ben Venom, and Bonnie Brenda Scott. The video gives an interesting behind the scenes look into McRight’s studio as well as a history of how he came to concentrate his practice of making shanks and improvised weapons. Art Focus: Jane Edden

Just like artists we have covered in the past like Polly Morgan and Kate Mccgwire, English artist Jane Edden utilizes birds for her materials and medium of choice in her work. This recent series collectively entitled Ornithomorph (on view at Flowers Gallery through January 26th) consists miniature jackets created beautifully from hundreds of tiny feathers. The small sculptural pieces are Edden’s way of “our attitudes to nature and the intention behind our consumption of natural materials.” Take a look at more examples below… Via Designboom.

Showing: Michael Johansson – “Still Lifes” @ Flat Gallery

Currently showing at the Flat Gallery in Milan is a solo from Sweden-based artist Michael Johansson entitled Still Lifes. On view through February 24th, the exhibition features a continuation of the conceptual artist’s three-dimensional work that deals with ideas of space and form. The re-purposing of everyday objects into perfect cubes (among other sculptural installations) arranged by different hues strikes a visually intriguing balance throughout the showspace. Look for upcoming shows at the Konsthallen Trollhättan in Sweden and Vigeland-museet in Norway. Via Designboom.

Back in November, we stopped by Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan, to check out shows by two fresh, talented artists – Vietnam native Diem Chau, and Kappao from Korea.
