Building on his successful showing there in 2011 (covered), Japanese artist Haroshi will be returning to the Jonathan LeVine Gallery for another solo show (opening January 12th). Known for his increasingly complex sculptural works created from skateboards, he’ll be bringing a series of pieces with him collectively entitled Virtual Reality. Daniel Arsham’s exhibition, Reach Ruin, recently opened at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia where he was the artist-in-residence. Arsham, who is also one-half of design studio Snarkitecture (a partnership with Alex Mustonen) was inspired by his experiences with Hurricane Andrew as a youngster (the show’s title is an anagram for the word hurricane) to create a series of works that speak to the fragility of architecture in the face of the destructive power of nature. Congratulations to Michael Murphy on this recently completed commission for Time Magazine. The full panoramic view (captured in the animated GIF above) of the sculptural portrait of Barack Obama is featured on the iPad edition of Time’s Person Of The Year edition. Mike’s 66 piece reverse stencil sculpture is reminiscent of the public commission memorial sculpture he created of Stephanie Tubbs Jones in Cleveland a couple of years ago. Openings: Bob Dob – “Mouseketeer Army” @ La Luz de Jesus

Back in November, the La Luz de Jesus gallery in Los Angeles hosted all new works from Bob Dob (alongside Nathan Ota’s solo). Entitled Mouseketeer Army, the showing featured 76 new paintings that could be arranged together into the shape of his surreal take on the American Flag and were thematically based on a back story of the radical Youth International Party invading Disneyland. Rounding out the exhibition were a series of large-scale three dimensional works based on the Southern California-based artist’s most popular characters. Discuss Bob Dob here.

While checking out the PULSE art fair (highlights here) during Basel Week Miami, we made sure to stop by the Joshua Liner booth to see what they had to offer. Flanked on two walls by monumental works by Gerhard Richter and Julie Mehretu, Marian Goodman Gallery’s booth at Art Basel Miami Beach provided spectacular viewing for all that visited its booth. Art market man of the year Gerhard Richter’s striped piece was from his series using a digital process and provided a taste for those that missed his most recent show with Goodman.
