Update: Kate Mccgwire

It appears that the London-based Kate MccGwire has created some new work since her showing at All Visual Arts last April. For this series, the sculptor who utilizes feathers has enclosed her beautiful free-flowing forms in what look to be vintage cabinets. The pieces entitled Guile, Lure, Quell, Seer and Yearn feature carefully placed plumage from both MccGwire’s light and dark winged friends, transformed into emotion-evoking abstractions with her gifted hands. Take a look at more photos after the jump, but you can also currently see her […]

Viewpoints / Openings: Olek — “I do not expect to be a mother but I do expect to die alone” @ Tony’s Gallery, London

AM was at Tony’s Gallery in Shoreditch on Thursday to see the first UK solo show by Olek (set-up and teaser photos here). The New York-based artist has been making the most of her extended London visit, transforming the ground floor of the gallery into a domestic setting filled with crocheted furniture and other household items. Everything but the entrance area, the ceiling, and a couple of plants has been given a second skin. The combination of brightly-coloured yarn and Olek’s signature camouflage pattern means […]

Conjoined II, a followup to last year’s successful debut as a group show, recently opened at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica. Once again, Chet Zar’s (interviewed) was tapped to bring together a selection of sculptural work from his friends and peers, which mostly focused on objects of the bizarre, fantastic, and surreal. Perhaps the pieces that received the most attention were these two eerie 3D renderings by Kevin Kirkpatrick of Beavis and Butt-head. More photos by Richard Brooks for Arrested Motion after the jump…

“Fresh Kills” @ Anonymous Gallery (Mexico)

The Anonymous Gallery kicked off their Mexico City location with a bang with a recently closed group show – Fresh Kills. The title of the showing refers to the 2,200 acres in New York known as Fresh Kills Landfill that will be converted to a huge public park over the course of the next 30 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into something beautiful is a metaphor for the type of work the artists in this show do – taking […]
