Showing: Swoon – “Murmuration” @ Black Rat Projects

Earlier this month, Swoon’s (interviewed) first London solo exhibition opened up at the Black Rat Projects. She has spent three long weeks transforming the gallery space with sculptural paper installations that she collectively entitled Mumuration. The project utilized imagery from much of her previous work including her Art in the Streets install at the MOCA, Thalassa at the NOMA, Anthropocene Extinction at the Boston (ICA). Anish Kapoor – “ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower” Completed

Anish Kapoor’s (with help from structural designer Cecil Balmond) twisting tower next to the Olympic stadium in London that we first mentioned last year has been completed ahead of the summer games for 2012. Dubbed the “ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower” due to steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, the chairman of ArcelorMittal, investing £19.6 million in the £22.7 million project, the 114.5 metres tall looping sculpture will dominate the skyline as UK’s tallest structure and feature two observation floors, a 455-step spiral staircase, an elevator, and a restaurant. Basel Week Miami ’11: Marcel Dzama @ David Zwirner

Now that Art Basel Week Miami has passed for another year, we’ve had a chance to catch our breath a little. We still have more to share with you though like Marcel Dzama’s work at the David Zwirner booth at the main fair. Streets: Slinkachu (Germany)

When talented street miniaturist Slinkachu left Germany after closing a show there in November at the Kunstverein Ludwigsburg, he made sure to leave a gift behind. Openings: KAWS – “FOCUS:KAWS” @ Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

On Friday night, AM attended Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth where KAWS unveiled his latest show in the Lone Star state. The exhibition entitled Focus:KAWS is a mix of color and monotone works from the Brooklyn based artist including a previous series of tondos which made its way from this year’s Armory. In addition, the monocolor counterpart of the neon Dissected Companion from his showing with Honor Fraser also made an appearance. Showing: Maurizio Cattelan – “All” @ the Guggenheim (NY)

Currently on show at the Guggenheim in New York until January 22nd is a can’t-be-missed retrospective from Maurizo Cattelan. The awe-inspiring installation features virtually everything the artist has produced since 1989, all displayed dangling on ropes in a gravity-defying presentation the museum’s rotunda. The Italian-born artist’s incendiary and provocative style, offered up in this inventive and fresh way, includes his infamous satirical sculptural works referencing the pope, Adolf Hitler, John F. Basel Week Miami ’11: Do Ho Suh @ Lehmann Maupin

Another artist whose work caught our eye during Art Basel Week Miami was Do Ho Suh’s creations for Lehmann Maupin at the main fair. Like his showing at the NY gallery back in September (covered), the Korean sculptor and installation artist brought some captivating household items created from translucent fabric that attracted many fair-goers to examine their ethereal details up close. Basel Week Miami ’11: Scope

One of the satellite fairs we attended during Art Basel Week Miami was Scope. Housing a variety of genres, we saw a healthy mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with. From OsGemeos to Roa, Ron English to Ray Caesar, Aakash Nihalani to Jenny Morgan, there seemed to be something for everyone at this fair. Check out more photos after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’11: FriendsWithYou

During our sojourn into the art extravaganza in Miami known as Art Basel Week, we were happy to be able to visit the artistic duo FriendsWithYou in their home base, office, and gallery space in the Design District. Basel Week Miami ’11: Rubell Family Collection

One of the most prestigious private showings at Art Basel Miami Week every year is from the Rubell Family Collection. This year, the group show culled from their extensive holdings was entitled American Exuberance, a reference to the fact that all artists included were American citizens and living in the States leading to a keen observation of American culture, economy and politics.
