Auctions: Bonhams “Urban Art Sale” Results (September)

Last Wednesday, Bonhams hosted their September Urban Art Sale to a “packed house” at the New Bond Street location in Central London. As we highlighted the strength of some recent Banksy results in our overview and analysis of his Top 25 Most Expensive Works Ever, money appears to continue pouring into street art unimpeded at the auction level, despite the general malaise evident in the financial markets. This fact was further reinforced in the wake of last week’s Bonhams Sale, with the auction realizing a […]

Viewpoints: Top 25 Most Expensive Banksy Works Ever

Last Wednesday during Christie’s Post War & Contemporary Art sale in London, a historic Banksy canvas came very close to tripling its high estimate of £50,000. Originally exhibited in 2002 at Santa’s Ghetto, a perennial winter group show (a modern riff of which occurred last December with Marks and Stencils) during those early, pre-hype years that saw Banksy canvases sell – and sometimes sit unsold – for a mere few hundred quid, Bird with Grenade closed at £145,250 ($228,043). The piece serves as an interesting […]

Openings: MS Fundraiser for Tim Strazza @ Joshua Liner Gallery

We all hit bumps in the road, but with a little help we can all overcome any obstacles. As mentioned previously, a good friend of AM and assistant director of Joshua Liner Gallery, Tim Strazza, was unfortunately diagnosed with a Multiple Sclerosis. We helped sponsor a fundraiser created by the gallery to generate funds that went to support Tim and his medical bills. It seemed that almost everyone came out of the woodworks to donate artwork for the charity auction including a heavy rotation of […]

Benefits: MS Fundraiser for Tim Strazza @ Joshua Liner Gallery

This Thursday, a very special art fundraiser will be held at Joshua Liner Gallery for our friend Tim Strazza who was unfortunately diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. We are helping to sponsor a benefit event where all proceeds will go to his medical bills. Some of your favorite AM artists have generously donated works for the cause which will be available via a silent auction. Online absentee bids will be available, so please contact the gallery. The art community has banded together to show their support. […]

Openings / Benefits: “Sea No Evil 2011” @ Riverside Municipal Auditorium

Last night in Riverside, the Socal art scene made a rare migration into the IE for the annual Sea No Evil show and benefit. Proceeds of the auction go to Captain Paul Watson and his Sea Shepard Conservation Society, of Whale Wars fame, with many of the artists we follow participating including Jeff Soto with this year’s featured image seen above. More photos after the jump…

Banksy – “Gas Mask Boy” @ Sotheby’s

What appears to be a previously unseen piece from Banksy by the general public has surfaced for an auction at Sotheby’s London at the end of the month. The piece created in 2010 and entitled Gas Mask Boy was probably acquired directly from the artist with appoximate overall dimensions of 27″ x 39″. If you remember, there was a somewhat similar image on a postcard included in the Exit Through The Gift Shop DVD set. Happy bidding to those that can afford the estimate of $97,000 – […]

Auctions: “Under The Influence” @ Phillips de Pury

A little while back, on our day excursion to catch the Will Ryman installation in Manhattan’s Midtown district, we also stopped by Phillips de Pury & Company’s Under The Influence auction (previewed). Held at PDP’s flagship space, this great sale gave us a diverse assortment of top notch artists. A sampling of the roster included Kehinde Wiley, Faile, Ryan McGinley, Joe Bradley, Yoshitomo Nara, Dash Snow, Amie Dicke, Damien Hirst, Lamar Peterson, Dzine, and Mr. One of the interesting things about this event was the […]

Streets: Urs Fischer Bear Sculpture (New York)

A 23 foot tall, 20 ton bronze teddy bear from Urs Fischer was recently installed in New York at the Park Avenue plaza. The signature sculptural piece entitled Untitled (Lamp/Bear) from the young Swiss artist will be in place for public consumption until it goes on the block next month at Christie’s where it’s expected to fetch over $10 million dollars. To install the work, the auction house had to get six city permits and pay to reinforce the floor so that it could take […]

The evening included a live painting session by Lamour Supreme and Greg Mishka, as well as a ticket raffle with the proceeds going to the Japan Red Cross. A few highlights of […]
