Coverage: Sotheby’s & Christie’s Auction

Preview: Phillips de Pury Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales

AM continues its coverage of the London February Auctions (see our Christie’s preview) with a look at Phillips de Pury’s Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales (February 12 – 13 2010). Overall, there are fewer outstanding pieces available here than at Christie’s or Sotheby’s, however there are still many fantastic, iconic pieces up for grabs, including several Basquiats, a strong Banksy, an early Kaws set, and a fabulous Ai Weiwei triptych (above). Auctions: Giacometti’s “Walking Man I” Sculpture Sells at Sotheby’s for Record $104.3M

At Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale in London today (Feb 3), this Alberto Giacometti sculpture sold for £65 million or $104.3 million.  The “Walking Man” is a mottled bronze and stands six-foot tall.  Its sale is a record for the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction.  Pablo Picasso’s “Boy with a Pipe” was the previous record holder.  It sold for $104 million in 2004 at Sotheby’s in New York. Benefit: “Auction For Haiti” @ Brooklynite Gallery

Our friends at Brooklynite Gallery are having an auction to raise money for the Haitian Orphanage – Chances For Children. They put together some nice pieces from artists such as Guy Denning, Miss Bugs, Beejoir, C215, Eelus and K-Guy. You can check out the pieces and bid here. With 100% of the proceeds going directly to the orphanage, it’s a definite win-win for all who participate in this very charitable event. More images after the jump.

On February 1st, Midtown gallery Haunch of Venison will play host to an auction event to benefit HiArt!’s Time In children’s art initiative. Openings and Benefit: Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Auction & Party

The much anticipated Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary party (previewed) went off this past Saturday and drew over 2,000 art lovers to the newly remodeled Factory Place Arts Complex in downtown Los Angeles. Mister Cartoon had all his classic rides out on display in the outside area as well as a beautiful chopper and his show-stopping pimped out Ice Cream truck inside with the rest of the art on display.
