Viewpoints / Openings: Dran — ‘Public Execution’ pop-up show in Soho, London

It’s been some time since Pictures On Walls has organised an art exhibition. The previous one was in December 2013 with the Shok-1 solo show, X-Rainbow. Last year, POW gave up its premises on Commercial Street in East London. With a permanent show space no longer retained, the number of print releases in 2014 restricted to a small handful (by Paul Insect, Maya Hayuk and Invader), and plenty of competitors arriving on the street art scene eager to fill the void, many wondered what the […]

Showing: Kour Pour – “Samsara” @ Depart Foundation

Currently up now until March 7 is Kour Pour’s first solo exhibition, curated by Nicola Ricciardi, in Los Angeles at Depart Foundation. The show includes the artist’s coveted carpet paintings, as well as a wall installation consisting of golden powdered incense. Unlike previous versions of his carpet paintings, which used imagery appropriated from museum and auction catalogs, the artist has created original compositions and juxtaposed them in anachronistic and cross-cultural narratives. These pieces contain images of hunters and gatherers, religious icons and mystical creatures, merchants, lovers […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: Rubell Collection – Six Solo Commissioned Exhibitions

The Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Arts Foundation is probably the most popular and well-known of the private collections in Miami. It is also one of the best and most in-depth, having been put together by Don and Mera Rubell over the course of 50 years. Opening on occasion of this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach edition, the Foundation’s first floor contains six commissioned solo exhibitions by the following artists: Will Boone, Aaron Curry, Lucy Dodd, Mark Flood, David Ostrowski, and Kaari Upson. Open right now until Dec 19 in Los Angeles is Quam Odunsi’s third solo show with Design Matters Gallery. Exploring the logical fallacy of distinction without a difference, the artist utilizes original content taken on film cameras (35mm, 120mm, Polaroid) which is silkscreened onto canvas and paper; sculpture, which includes collaged Polaroid prints; and a eye-popping original short film shot on Super8, which is shown in the back room space of the gallery. A limited edition (of 18) print of the tricycle image has also […]

Openings: Harif Guzman @ SOHO Arts Club

These days, New York’s SOHO is primarily know for its high fashion, high society and high dollar retailers. Comfortably nestled among the boutiques, however, is a sprawling 4,000 square foot, second story loft called The SOHO Arts Club.  The space—and its founder, acclaimed contemporary artist Harif Guzman—quietly provide much needed refuge to many local and traveling artists. Guzman spent many of his early years wandering the same New York City streets, when the neighborhood wasn’t nearly as polished and was certainly less en vogue than […]

Recap: Sam Falls @ Eva Presenhuber (M Building – Miami)

As we gear up for the coming festivities of Art Basel Miami 2014, let’s look back at one of the impressive exhibitions held at the M Building by Galerie Eva Presenhuber during last year’s week of art madness. Artist Sam Falls had an excellent solo exhibition in which he showcased his multifaceted talents, ranging from his rope dye paintings and sculptures to his large scale lattice works that spanned the entire length of the M Building’s double height ceilings. It was an awesome display of […]

Openings: Faile – “Works on Wood” @ Allouche Gallery

Duality is generally viewed as good vs. evil, right vs. wrong, love and hate and the relationship they have with the other, and that is just one of the many constants we all love about the work of Faile. Provocative imagery paired with romanticized hardship, “No Expectations”,  “With Love and Kisses, Nothing lasts Forever”, and “Fast Love” just a few of the dozens of inspiring quotes found within their latest stacked fragmented cubed collage. Even their signature “1986” referring to that moment of the challenger disaster, reminding the viewer that some moments you quite simply […]

Baby Tattoville ’14: “Through The Looking Glass” @ Riverside Art Museum

Every year the city of Riverside, California plays host to Baby Tattooville, it is one of the highlights for the town and an unmistakable part of the personality of the event. The separation from Los Angeles and its art scene is part of what make the event so unique. The attendees are taken out of their environment and plunged into a Baby Tattoo world, populated by lowbrow artists, their creations and the people who love them. Each year, the Riverside Art Museum puts on an […]

Openings: Dallas Art Fair 2014

In the past few years, Dallas has been a hotbed of great art activity and related events. With the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth hosting KAWS & Barry McGee (here & here), the Dallas Contemporary exhibitions of DZINE & Faile (here & here), and MTV holding its annual star-studded RE:DEFINE auction (here) in the city, it’s not surprising to see the action shift to this key region. One of the most important art fairs occurring in the Midwest the past few years is the Dallas […]
