Frieze Week NYC ’14: PULSE

Once considered a top satellite fair for emerging to mid-career artists, PULSE lost some of that reputation in recent years, as many of its exhibitors jumped ship to other competing fairs. However, at the beginning of 2014, PULSE took on a new director tasked with bringing it back to its former status. And the difference was somewhat visible last week, as PULSE New York emerged with a smaller, more highly curated show. Amongst the booths, there were a few standouts worth mentioning, such as works […]

Basel Week HK ’14: Art Basel Hong Kong – First Look

It’s May and AM is on the second leg of its back to back Art Fair tour between Frieze Week in NYC (covered) and Art Basel Week in Hong Kong. In its second year after a takeover and changing its moniker to Art HK to Art Basel Hong Kong, this massive showcase has now officially evolved into the quintessential art fair for all of Asia. Drawing blue-chip galleries from all over the globe, ABHK brought the ever growing world of art to the doorstep of […]

Frieze Week ’14: Frieze Art Fair (Part 1)

Now in its third year, Frieze New York is no longer merely the new-kid-on-the-block fair trying to challenge the dominance of The Armory Show (covered 1 & 2) but instead has settled in and solidified it’s place in NYC’s art calendar. As in the past two iterations, Frieze NY 2014, which opened late last week, brought together some of the world’s top galleries, who in turn brought artworks from many of the world’s most acclaimed artists. And although there were plenty of jaw-dropping works to be […]

Openings: Dallas Art Fair 2014

In the past few years, Dallas has been a hotbed of great art activity and related events. With the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth hosting KAWS & Barry McGee (here & here), the Dallas Contemporary exhibitions of DZINE & Faile (here & here), and MTV holding its annual star-studded RE:DEFINE auction (here) in the city, it’s not surprising to see the action shift to this key region. One of the most important art fairs occurring in the Midwest the past few years is the Dallas […]

Armory Week ’14: ADAA Art Show

During Armory Week, one can view some of the most prestigious paintings and storied names in art at the ADAA Art Show. Held annually at the Park Avenue Armory (featured), this smaller fair showcases some significant artistic gems by hosting some of the most elite galleries out there. Taking a quick stroll around is not really an option as almost every booth features neck breaking artwork from older, as well as newer generation notables, such as Rothko, Haring, Condo, Turrell, Calder, Finch, Lewitt, Auerbach, Lichenstein, […]

Armory Week ’14: Armory Art Fair (Part 2)

One of the unique aspect of the Armory Art Show during  Armory Week is the fact that it’s spread out over two piers (92 & 94) on the west side of Manhattan Island with each pier themed differently. Pier 92 housed classic works from the Modern art period. Art from the history books were on display in this focused section of the fair, while the pier 94 housed works from the current contemporary era showing alongside a newly debuted Focus: China area where select gallerists from the […]

Armory Week ’14: Armory Art Fair (Part 1)

Last month, tens of thousands flocked to New York City to participate in Armory Week. Manhattan was filled with satellite fairs and exhibitions highlighting the vibrant arts culture in one of the main hubs of the US. At the center of it all is the flagship Armory Art Show. The long standing fair features some of the top galleries in the world displaying an amazing range of artistry. From younger emerging artists to household names, we doubt you’ll not find something exciting at this mainstay […]

Armory Week ’14: The Independent

Within the last five years, The Independent has established itself as one of the must-see satellites during Armory Week in New York. The small fair, which launched in 2010, has tended to present the cutting edge of contemporary art, and with emerging art being today’s hot topic, collectors made sure that they got in early to see what the event had to offer. This year’s complement of 50 international galleries did not disappoint, together displaying a strong and challenging selection of artworks across different mediums. And […]

Armory Week ’14: Volta

One of the satellite fairs we visited first during New York’s Armory Week is Volta. This unique event does not showcase a sampling of a diverse roster of artists like most booths, but instead the invited gallerists select one artist to focus on. This results in a memorable way to keep the viewer’s attention as they run through the aisles focusing on one gallery and discovering a single artist at a time. Photo credit: AK for Arrested Motion.
