Basel Week Miami ’11: Marcel Dzama @ David Zwirner

Now that Art Basel Week Miami has passed for another year, we’ve had a chance to catch our breath a little. We still have more to share with you though like Marcel Dzama’s work at the David Zwirner booth at the main fair. Taking center stage was this inset intricately conceived diorama featuring the NY-based artist’s sculptural skills and sense of theater. More photos of his other work for the booth after the jump…

Teaser: Affordable Art Fair (Los Angeles)

For the younger collectors out there in Los Angeles, there is good news as the Affordable Art Fair will be in town from January 18th – 22nd for their debut showing. Held on the event deck at L.A. Live, the goal is to present contemporary art priced from $100 – $10,000, with half of the work under $5,000. One of the exhibitors will be Thinkspace with a lineup featuring Adam Caldwell, Audrey Kawasaki, Brian M. Viveros, DABS MYLA, David Cooley, David MacDowell, Jacub Gagnon, Jason […]

Basel Week Miami ’11: Mark Moore Gallery @ PULSE

One of our favorite booths this year during Art Basel Week in Miami was from the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles. Some of the works featured included the intricate wood works from Kenichi Yokono, the thick and textured paintings from Allison Schulnik (whose video we just shared with you yesterday), the kinetic stylings of Andrew Schoultz, the crowd shot watercolors from David Rathman, and the hyperrealistic portraits from Yigel Ozeri. Basel Week Miami ’11 / Streets: ROA

Other than the collaboration with Eine, the ever hustling ROA also found time for other projects while in town for Art Basel Week (like the wall you see above). We are always fascinated by the ways the Belgium-based street painter works in unique architectural quirks into his milieu of anatomized animal murals. This piece above is no different with this marine friend of his chopped in half by a wall element with some copious drips emphasizing the point. More detailed photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11 / Streets: RISK

Not content to let his MSK brothers (RETNA, RIME) have all the fun, the LA-based RISK also made the trip to Miami for Art Basel Week. Using his unique skills over several days, the influential writer got up this abstract and multicolored gem for his fans in South Florida to enjoy. Thankfully, photographer Koshin Finley was on hand to document everything with his lens. More photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11: Do Ho Suh @ Lehmann Maupin

Another artist whose work caught our eye during Art Basel Week Miami was Do Ho Suh’s creations for Lehmann Maupin at the main fair. Like his showing at the NY gallery back in September (covered), the Korean sculptor and installation artist brought some captivating household items created from translucent fabric that attracted many fair-goers to examine their ethereal details up close. More photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11: Scope

One of the satellite fairs we attended during Art Basel Week Miami was Scope. Housing a variety of genres, we saw a healthy mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with. From OsGemeos to Roa, Ron English to Ray Caesar, Aakash Nihalani to Jenny Morgan, there seemed to be something for everyone at this fair. Check out more photos after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’11: Ryan McGinley, Dash Snow, and Dan Colen – “The Triology Exhibiton” @ The Ring Art Center

As members of a special group of artists from NY, Ryan McGinley, Dash Snow, and Dan Colen will be forever linked – all have achieved their success in their own right, some more infamously than others. The Triology Exhibition brings three of them together for a show at The Ring Art Center during Art Basel Miami Week and was certainly one of the highlights for AM. More photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11: FriendsWithYou

During our sojourn into the art extravaganza in Miami known as Art Basel Week, we were happy to be able to visit the artistic duo FriendsWithYou in their home base, office, and gallery space in the Design District. The exhibition consisted of new work created especially for this annual influx of art fans and collectors, as well as some of the work that they displayed at The Hole Gallery back in June (covered). More photos after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’11: Rubell Family Collection

One of the most prestigious private showings at Art Basel Miami Week every year is from the Rubell Family Collection. This year, the group show culled from their extensive holdings was entitled American Exuberance, a reference to the fact that all artists included were American citizens and living in the States leading to a keen observation of American culture, economy and politics. On the roster were 64 artists and 190 artworks, 40 of which were made in 2011, many specifically for this exhibition and included […]
