Frieze ’11: Overview

London’s Frieze week kicked off properly on Wednesday 12 October with the preview for Frieze Art Fair in Regent’s Park. AM has long been a Frieze enthusiast. The calibre of its exhibitors and their booths makes most other contemporary art fairs look provincial in comparison. Conscious of the international spotlight, the big fish bring out the big guns and do whatever else they can to retain their dominance, while the ambitious smaller galleries pull out the stops to try raising the bar even higher for […]

Frieze ’11: White Cube Gallery

The recent opening of a third gallery space in London confirms White Cube ongoing strength, and its presence at the Frieze Art Fair is nothing less than spectacular. The booth features some impressive works by the gallery’s roster of artists such as Jake and Dinos Chapman, Marc Quinn, Damien Hirst, Andreas Gursky, and Tracey Emin to name a few. In particular, what caught our eye included The Chapman brothers presenting a controversial version of Mary and Child entitled the Milk of Human Weakness, while the bronze […]

Art Platform ’11: Ai Weiwei

As we walked out the elevators last week to head into the main exhibition hall for Art Platform, something caught out attention in the side atrium. Imagine our surprise and delight as our eyes laid on Ai Weiwei’s Snake Bag, one of his most moving and intriguing works. The undulating 55 feet long serpent is created from 360 children’s backpacks and commemorates the deadly 2008 Sichuan earthquake. When the artist – activist saw the scattered backpacks in the rubble left by the thousands of children […]

Preview: Frieze ’11 – Alison Jacques Gallery

Alison Jacques Gallery returns to the Frieze Art Fair this year and its booth features some amazing works by the gallery’s impressive roster of artists. Highlights include new large photographic pieces by Ryan McGinley (also see Team Gallery booth), which will be shown alongside works by the London gallery’s roster of artists, such as Robert Mapplethorpe, Lygia Clark, and Thomas Zipp.  Make this booth a destination if you are visiting the fair. Frieze ’11 – Mark Ryden @ Paul Kasmin Gallery

After recently bringing you preview coverage of what Team Gallery has in store for next weekend’s Frieze Art Fair, we now have a (USDA) prime sample of what Paul Kasmin Gallery will be serving up at the London event. Much like the single awe-striking painting brought abroad last year, Mark Ryden has yet again proven his idiosyncratic genius with this newest creation. Marrying his affinity for Honest Abe and his love for painting meat comes The Meat Shop. The two recurring protagonists – the complicated […]

Previews: Frieze London ’11 – Ryan McGinley @ Team Gallery

Running from Thursday, October 13th to Sunday, October 16th over in London, Frieze 2011 is primed to kick back into action next week in Regent’s Park. Traditionally one of stronger perennial fairs, which will also see a New York version for the first time in May of next year, Team Gallery has become one of the compelling staples at the UK event. Much like last year, the New York gallery will be bringing some brand new work from their New York-based photographer Ryan McGinley. In […]

Art Platform ’11: RETNA @ New Image Art

Building on the momentum of high profile projects he has been linked to recently (see Chanel, Heal the Bay, VistaJet, and WeHo Library), street calligraphist RETNA (featured) brought his work to Art Platform over the weekend. Showing with New Image Art, the LA-based writer shared various monochromatic large scale works on paper and canvas with fairgoers. More photos after the jump taken for us by Carlos Gonzalez.

PULSE Los Angeles ’11: First Look

With Art Platform in town, the PULSE art fair also decided to hold their Los Angeles event the same weekend. Featuring a mix established and emerging galleries, attendees are giving a nice variety of young and veteran artists.  Also associated with the fair is Pulse Projects, which included installations from participants such as Mike Stilkey, Jen Stark, and Kevin Cyr along with murals from Greg Lamarche and Dave Kinsey (covered). More photos after the jump from Carlos Gonzalez…

Previews: PULSE Los Angeles ’11 – David B. Smith

After previewing three booths (here, here, and here) that we are looking forward to later today at the PULSE art fair, we have one final suggestion for those attending. Head over to check out the offerings from David B. Smith as he will be bringing works from Kris Lewis, Gregory Euclide, and Paul Jacobsen. The expressive new works from Lewis, unique three-dimensional paintings from Euclide, and hyper-realistic renderings from Jacobsen should round out your fair-going experience nicely. Tauba Auerbach Keynote Speaker @ The NY Art Book Fair (Queens)

The NY Art Book Fair is set to kick off tomorrow, September 30th running through October 3rd. Generously organized again by non-profit Printed Matter, the sixth iteration of the free and open to the public event will see more than 200 exhibitors, cementing itself as the world’s premier event for artists’ books, contemporary art catalogs and monographs, art periodicals, and artist zines. The gravity defying architecture of MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, Queens is reason enough to attend. However, as an even greater incentive this […]
