Armory Week ’11: First Look at The Armory Show

New York is a lot of work… especially when the Armory is in town – the busiest week of art in North America after Basel Miami of course. We caught the VIP preview to bring you a detailed first look at the flagship Armory fair. You’ll definitely see many blue chip names, but to our delight we also found many new comers. Check it all after the jump.

Armory Week ’11 – KAWS @ Honor Fraser

Tondo… That was the word of the week that Honor Fraser taught us about their Armory booth featuring Kaws. Tondo is the term for the round canvases which dazzled passerby’s at the blue chip art fair. At the center of the showcase, an impressive “Tondo Wall” was created using 21 round canvases. Each piece featured a different expression set in a distinct minimalist fashion and together the installation worked to convey a possible sequence or gamut of emotion. Conceptually, it seems that Kaws is integrating […]

Teaser / Setup: Armory Week ’11 – Jim Houser (Jonathan LeVine booth @ VOLTA)

Showing with Jonathan LeVine at the VOLTA satellite fair (also see Mark Jenkins & Richard Colman) at this year’s Armory Week will be Jim Houser. Judging from all the setup action we see, attendees can look forward to very nice installation which is typical for the Philadelphia-based artist (ie last year’s Subliminal Projects show).  AM loves his quilt-like blocks of imagery and look forward to seeing new symbology added to his lexicon.

Teaser: Armory Week ’11 – Mark Jenkins – “Family Room” @ Carmichael Gallery (Volta)

Continuing our look at this year’s upcoming Armory Week in New York, we turn our attention to the Carmichael Gallery who will have a booth at the VOLTA satellite fair. The LA gallery will be presenting Family Room, a installation of new sculptural works from Mark Jenkins converting their space into an unconventionally furnished family room which will in turn be his commentaries on the institutions of family and home. Discuss Mark Jenkins here.

While Matthew Palladino ended 2010 with authority, sending a full body of brilliantly executed work down to Art Basel Week with Baer Ridegeway (covered) in December, he looks primed to continue the snowball of momentum with a new batch of his bizarrely mesmerizing paintings on tap for The Armory Show in New York. Running from March 3 – 6, Fredricks & Freiser Gallery will be showing off the Philadelphia based artist at the main event during the late winter fair season in the Big Apple. […]

ALAC ’11: Andrew Schoultz @ Jerome Zodo Contemporary

Of all the booths we saw at Art Los Angeles Contemporary ’11, the one that stood out the most was Jermone Zodo Contemporary’s, which had a solo show by the prolific and outstanding Andrew Schoultz.  The show was anchored by a mixed-media piece, Monument to a Whirlwind (pictured above), that measured an impressive 11 ft. by 20 ft. (it was the largest piece on paper at the entire fair).  We are happy to report that the monumental work was purchased by a museum in the […]
