Previews: Esao Andrews – “Petrichor” @ Mesa Contemporary Art Museum

Coming up next month (May 10th), Mesa Contemporary Art Museum will be opening Petrichor, a mid career retrospective dedicated to the dark and surreal vision of Esao Andrews. Featuring 20 iconic paintings contributed by collectors around the world, the showing from the Mesa, Arizona native will also include never seen before pieces, 70 skatedecks he has designed in the past, as well as a site specific mural. Upcoming: James Jean – “Eternal Journey” @ LOTTE Museum of Art (Seoul)

Last weekend, James Jean (interviewed) previewed a new stained glass work he has created in collaboration with Judson Studios. The large sculptural work is a followup to the pieces that were created for his exhibition in Tokyo last year (covered), and will be on display when the American artist’s solo Eternal Journey opens at the LOTTE Museum of Art in Seoul on April 4th. Showing: Emily Mae Smith @ Consortium Museum

A couple weeks ago in Dijon, France, the Consortium Museum opened the first ever institutional exhibition devoted to Emily Mae Smith. Bringing together about forty artworks made between 2014 and 2018 from private collections, the show gives a nice overview of the American artist’s recent output. Previews: Super A – “Domestication” @ The Brand Library and Arts Center

Tomorrow (November 3rd), as part of a series of solos and group shows put on by Thinkspace at Glendale’s Brand Library & Arts Center, Stefan Thelen aka Super A will be presenting a selection of new paintings from his Trapped series. Entitled Domestication, the new body of work sees the Dutch artist continue to deconstruct cartoon, fairytale, or pop cultural archetypes by cleverly peeling away the surface while revealing the realistic version of the character inside. Showing: Ai Weiwei – “Life Cycle” @ Marciano Art Foundation

Last weekend, the Marciano Art Foundation opened an new expansive show from Ai Weiwei, his first major institutional exhibition in Los Angeles. Entitled Life Cycle, the showing includes old and new pieces, as well as a reworking of older concepts and techniques from the Chinese artist. The centerpiece is his sculptural response to the global refugee crisis, a massive boat made from bamboo used in traditional Chinese kite-making.
