Openings: “Sacred Monsters” @ Tufts University Art Gallery

We can’t be EVERYWHERE at once. Fortunately, AM has friends who enjoy art as much as we do. Last Thursday, Josh Liner played correspondent for us and trekked up to Boston to attended “Sacred Monsters” (previewed) at Tufts University Art Gallery. The show showcases some “young guns” of the Japanese art scene – Mr., Chiho Aoshima, Tomokazu (Matsu) Matsuyama’s (interviewed), Oscar, Kenjiro Kitade, Tokyo Kamen, Mahomi Kunikata, Nobuhiro Ishihara and Saito Oiwa. These eight notable mid-career artist have tackled numerous mediums with much success and Tufts […]

Openings: Evan Hecox – “The Last Thousand Years” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

On Saturday night, Evan Hecox premiered his first solo, “The Last Thousand Years,” (previewed) in New York. Joshua Liner Gallery was filled with fans eager to get a glimpse of his work. The Vietnamese themed show dazzled onlookers as Evan took the time greet and draw for many of his fans with his book “Urban Abstract” in hand. We even spotted his fellow peers – Matzu and Molly Crabapple hanging out. Overall, the show clearly showcased the talents of Hecox’s architectural abstracts and his ability […]

Openings: Brian Donnelly – “Blasphemies, Monstrosities, & Other Perversions @ Show & Tell Gallery

We recently previewed a couple of pieces from Brian Donnelly’s solo outing “Blasphemies, Monstrosities, & Other Perversions,” which opened last week at Show and Tell Gallery in Toronto.  We thought the pieces we saw looked like a strong indication that Donnelly would be putting together a compelling body of work. Well, boy, were we right! Check out the pictures from the opening after the jump.

Openings: Barry McGee @ Biennale de Lyon

Barry McGee’s participation in the annual Biennale de Lyon was cause for excitement in the AM offices, especially after seeing some video footage.  Some photos surfaced this morning of the opening of the immersive installation Mr. Twist graced the French with (consisting of some new and old elements).  Looks like McGee went all out with tagged overturned vans, paintings, classic patterned pieces, just an overall aweseom exhibit. More pics after the jump…

Openings: Takashi Murakami – “Self Portraits” @ Emmanuel Perrotin

You’d think an artist would slowdown to take it all in after a series of major retrospectives. If it’s Takashi Murakami, then you thought wrong. Since his monstrous retrospective tour ended this past Feburary in Spain, Murakami has been on a tear, creating bodies of work on almost every medium you can imagine – sculpture, canvas, print, vinyl, animation, you name it – he’s put his team from Kaikai Kiki to work. The problem is, each show usually featured only one facet of his artistic endeavors. So […]

Openings: Kenny Scharf – “Barberadise” @ Honor Fraser

Newjungle (left), Madgladtree (center),  Wildjungle (right) AM was on hand as Kenny Scharf opened his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles since 2005.  Honor Fraser Gallery was filled with groovy, brightly colored florescent paintings and sculptures from the legendary Pop artist.  Continuing with his mission of penetrating the boundaries of fine art through the use and reference of popular culture, Scharf’s paintings features characters from the Hanna-Barbera universe, mainly The Flinstones and The Jetsons. Read the rest of the entry and view more photos after […]

Openings: Dain – “Copesetic” @ Brooklynite Gallery

“Copesetic” is the name of Dain’s first ever solo show at the Brooklynite Gallery. It means “fine and dandy,” a throwback term from the early 1940’s. When Brooklynite released the preview video for the show (here), it seemed hilarious and appropriate for the “old school” themed show. Little did we know that Rae and Hope of Brooklynite were going to literally transform the ENTIRE gallery into a replica New York “Speakeasy” complete with crystal chandeliers, floor to ceiling wall paper, and even transforming their outdoor […]

Openings: Mark Dean Veca – “As Cold As They Come” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Continuing with our coverage of Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s massive kick off of the new art season, AM brings you Mark Dean Veca’s “As Cold As They Come.” This psychedelic body of work continues where his last show “Paintings, Wall Drawings, and Collaborations” left off (covered/interviewed). At the center is “Popeyeconography,” which is a series based on the classic Popeye cartoon. It was great to see Brutus, Olive Oyl, Wimpy and Swee’ Pea redone under Mark’s surreal biomorphic style. He even had time to sneak in […]

Openings: Edwin Ushiro – “Softly Encompassing the Womb” @ LeBasse Projects

Something about LeBasse Projects’ new space brings out the best in its stable of artists. With Tessar Lo and Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) taking it up another level (here & here), Edwin Ushiro could not help but elevate his game for his solo that opened last weekend, “Softly Encompassing the Womb.”  With a body of work inspired by childhood ghost stories he heard growing up in Hawaii, Ushiro impressed the crowd with the meaningful and personal work as well as dazzled eyes with his new vibrant […]

Openings: D*Face – “Ludovico Aversion Therapy/All Your Dreams Belong To Us” @ Jonathan LeVine

On Friday, AM had the pleasure of attending the private viewing of D*Face’s debut U.S. solo show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Following the sneak preview we got from interviewing him and visiting his studio in London, it was hard to sit still and wait for the curtains to come up to enjoy the full body of work and installations. Opening alongside of Mark Dean Veca (more on that later), there were plenty of peers in attendance – Kaws, Stash, Eric Haze, to name a few. […]
