Openings: Group Exhibition @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Saturday night, AM attended the opening of Joshua Liner Gallery’s summer group exhibition, which collects solid works from a very strong roster of artists, some of whom the gallery has shown previously and others of whom the gallery is working with for the first time. From the show, it is clear that Liner is actively evolving and maturing his gallery. And from the response from collectors and others at the opening, it seems that what he’s doing is working. Guy Denning’s lastest body of work “Celebrity Will East Itself,” currently showing at the Carmichael Gallery, goes beyond the glitz and glam of Hollywood and explores theÂ darker side ofÂ stardom. Working with oils, Denning presents a series of dark and powerful pieces compounded of raw emotion that exposes the uncertainty and insecurities of his ambiguous celebrity subjects. The power ofÂ these pieces is further highlighted by the textures and painterly technique he employs. Detailed photos of the work andÂ pics from the opening after the jump.

Better known for his photo realistic outdoor murals, El Mac brought his artwork indoors with the opening of his gallery show “Faces of Life” at Fifty24SF last Thursday. Featured in the show were a series large-scale pieces done with spray paint on burlap, with a majority consisting of portraits of ethereal women. “Low Fidelity,” (previewed) the latest body of work from French urban artistÂ Invader, has taken over Lazarides – Rathbone Place. Last Thursday saw the opening of “Pop Crime” at Opus Art in Newcastle, featuring the work of Crash (aka John Matos) and SheOne. AM recently attended the festive opening of Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s summer group show, entitled Beach Blanket Bingo. Chilling and chatting by the inflatable palm oases with a cold Pabst Blue Ribbon was a fun way to appreciate works by the over thirty participating artists, including Matt Haber, Seonna Hong, Elbow Toe, Richard Colman and Ron English. Bringing life to a row of twelve empty storefronts in New York, theÂ â€œWilloughby Windowsâ€ (previewed) community beautification project presented byÂ Ad Hoc Art in conjunction with the MetroTech Business Improvement District, was a success by all accounts. The storefronts, located at 89 to 106 Willoughby Street in Brooklyn, included participation fromÂ artists Chris Stain,Â Ellis G. (interviewed),Â Gaia, Logan Hicks (interviewed),Â Dennis McNett,Â Michael De Feo,Â Josh MacPhee andÂ more.
