Openings: “Ways of Seeing” @ Black Rat Press

Black Rat Press‘ stunning lighting rig came into its own this past Thursday when the new three-person show “Ways of Seeing” opened. Featuring new work from Swoon (interviewed), Brian Adam Douglas a.k.a. Elbow-Toe (interviewed) and Matt Small (interviewed), the vibrancy and luminosity of the colors of Douglas’ and Small’s work was really highlighted by the controlled approach to lighting against the brickwork backdrop of the gallery.Â More after the jump…

Openings: “Summer Group Show” @ StolenSpace

StolenSpace shows always attract a good crowd and last week’s opening of their annual “Summer Group Show” was no exception. London was basking in a serious heatwave last week and the ice cold Tiger Beer was a welcome relief from the heat for the AM contingent attending the show. Openings: David Ellis – “Constant Flow” @ New Image Art

AM had the chance to swing through New Image Art on the opening night of “Constant Flow” – the new solo show from Barnstormers member David Ellis. The show comes down this weekend, so we apologize for the lag in posting, it’s just been a busy month that’s been packed with shows, but Ellis killed it and the show is most definitely worth checking out if you have the chance. The cool thing about Ad Hoc Art is that they always have a separate project area to showcase some not so household names that are emerging from the local art scene.Â Showing alongside Gaia and Imminent Disaster last Friday wasÂ Nancie Yang. Nancie’s work caught our eyes because of her great use of color and female subjects which get your attention. More after the jump.

AMÂ stopped by to take a look at Reuben Rude’s show last weekend at Gallery 1988 (LA), where the “Afternoon with Greg Simkins” event (covered)Â was being held. He has been hard at work on this show, entitled “Americana,” for over a year. We quite liked the large installation piece (seen above), but also take a look at all the photos after the jump.

Openings: Vhils – “Scratching The Surface” @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

Portuguese street artist Vhils opened his first UK solo show “Scratching The Surface” last night to a packed house at Lazarides Rathbone Place. Vhils employed various mediums and techniques for his amazing portraiture pieces in the show, including stencils, collage and even a few relief pieces like the ones we saw in the video he released a couple of months ago, except this time he used acid and bleach instead of a hammer and chisel. Last Friday,Â Ad Hoc Art had a great two-person solo show withÂ Gaia and Imminent Disaster (previewed). The hippest of the Williamsburg crowd made their way out to see a great showing by these two street artists we recently saw in D.C. at theÂ â€œStreet/Studioâ€ experience. For the show, Gaia brought the streets to the gallery with a “outdoor” installation to complement each of his works while Imminent Disaster flexed her muscles by showing off her intricate hand-cut stencils and thought-provoking imagery. This past Saturday, Subliminal Projects presented the second installment of their “Park Life” series. Curated by Studio Number One, this latest body of work revolves around the theme of “The New Utopia,” which presents each artists’ individual representations of a perfect society. On Saturday, Invader and WK Interact drew a big crowd trying to catch a glimpse of the two hard-working artists from Europe’s Street Art scene. It was a treat to see both artists create large sized works to fill the walls ofÂ Jonathan Levine’s multi-room gallery. The works from WK conveyed much raw energy and emotion as hinted in our preview.
