Openings: Marilyn Minter – “Green Pink Caviar” @ Salon 94

AM stopped by Salon 94 to check out Marilyn Minter’s latest show “Green Pink Caviar.” One of our favorite photographers, Marilyn is again at her best with her signature style of showcasing glamor and its realistic underbelly. Through her unique vision, the viewer is transported to a world of vibrant colors and lusciously sexy subjects. Best known for her stunning photographs, Minter is also an accomplished painter and this body of work also features her largest photo-realistic painting to date. Continued after the jump…

Brendan Monroe (interviewed) was in Santa Monica this past Saturday, May 23rd, for a book signing at Richard Heller Gallery. Recently, we had the opportunity see Brendan in the Bay Area at Park Life and also to check out his studio. It was nice to see him in Southern California meeting with fans and taking time to draw in their sketchbooks. Take a look at the pics after the jump.

Openings: Herakut – No Placebos @ Red Flagg

German collaborative street art sensation Herakut (interviewed) opened their show “No Placebos” last night at Red Flagg in New York. Plenty of fans were in attendance, despite the fact that it was a “surprise” show with it being announced only the day before the opening. The packed house was definitely a testament to the rapid ascendancy and popularity of their work. The lovely Jasmin aka “Hera” and Falk aka “Akut” were on hand to chat with fans as well as sign copies of their recently […]

Openings: Louis Vuitton Exhibition – A Passion for Creation (Hong Kong)

Last night, Louis Vuitton premiered a show they curated entitled A Passion for Creation at the Hong Kong Museum of Art with a shortlist of some of the top names in Contemporary Art.  Some of the artists included Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, Paul Chan, Cao-Fei, Yang Fudong, Gilbert & George, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Andreas Gursky, Pierre Huyghe, Bertrand Lavier, and Christian Marclay. Of course LV homeboys Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, and Stephen Sprouse had a “special section” of their own, comprising of Vuitton’s antique trunks and […]

Openings: Andy Kehoe – “Living Twilight” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Andy Kehoe opened his first NYC solo “Living Twilight” at Jonathan Levine Gallery alongside Souther Salazar (covered). Through his style of detailed majestic landscapes and rich autumn hues, Kehoe was able to capture the essence of twilight. We also enjoyed his customary detailed man-beasts isolated in his beautiful serene locations. Kehoe’s “fantasy-esqe” style also gave us a sense of a storybook childhood nostalgia. After the Saturday opening of both shows, AM joined Andy and Souther for the official after-party in classic Levine fashion! Check out the pics and a […]

Dr. Sketchy Anti-Art School with David Stoupakis

It’s that time again. Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School held another “artist session.” Last time it was Ron English (covered) and this time it was with David Stoupakis. As always, the place was packed to the brim with art enthusiasts waiting to get their eyes on the beautiful muse sensation Apprella. Check the hot pictures that Molly Crabapple sent to us after the jump…

Openings: Souther Salazar – “Last Year’s Man” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Souther Salazar opened his show “Last Year’s Man” at Jonathan Levine Gallery last weekend with a huge body of quality works. We were completely overwhelmed by the various mediums/media that entranced our senses. Known for his melancholy characters that seem simple at first glance, further inspection reveals a veritable “world within a world” complexity. Souther seemed to have the audience in mind when creating his works, as there was literally something to appeal to almost every art enthusiast. There were large wood panels, a video […]

Openings/Video: I-Lib – “As Teardrops Fall” @ Stella Dore Gallery, London

AM stopped by to check out I-LIB’s (I Lurk In Bushes) debut solo show “As Teardrops Fall” at Stella Dore Gallery in London and we were blown away by his combination of spray paint and ballpoint pen drawings. This young artist has been causing a stir in the UK and we can see why there has been much interest in his work. Check out the cool video created by Neil Chester (above) as well as all the photos from the opening after the jump…

Openings: Brian M. Viveros & Matthew Bone – “Southern” @ Last Rites Gallery

Last Rites Gallery, which bills itself as a home for artists that prefer to explore the darker side of their imagination, serves as the perfect backdrop for “Southern,” (previewed) the two-person solo show featuring the work of Brian M. Viveros and Matthew Bone currently on view at the gallery. At AM, we enjoy art that touches a nerve with viewers and garners strong reactions – this show certainly fits the bill. The crowd at the opening was delighted by the raw and uncut exploration of […]
