David Shillinglaw (see the studio visit here) recently opened a new solo exhibition entitled You Are Here at Scream Gallery in London. A large crowd gathered to see the re-creation of the studio space of the artist, like an exploration of his creative mind, and enjoyed the new body of work on canvas, paper and wood, featuring symbols and typography with British artist’s signature sunny colour palette. StolenSpace is currently presenting a duo show with British artist Ben Turnbull and Spanish illustrative artist Ramon Maiden through May 15th. A self taught artist with a U.S. obsession, Turnbull learned his skill working with craftsmen and artisans. Back in 2006, the various firearms he produced encased in facsimiles of red fire alarm boxes bearing ‘In Emergency Break Glass’ were featured at the Banksy Santa’s Ghetto. After our interview & studio visit with the Belgium-based ROA ahead of his solo in New York, we attended the opening to see the results of his hard work over the last month crafting and painting a new body of work entitled Metazoa. Opening alongside Peter Ferguson’s Prime Meridian (covered), Roq La Rue packed even more art into the space to showcase the mini-group show titled Uchronia, and the upstairs featured Amanda Manitach’s Whiskey Helps. Featuring mostly Roq La Rue alumns, Uchronia asked artists to recreate or alter history in some way. Several weeks ago, Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opened his third solo show at Gallery Wendi Norris in San Francisco (previewed), titled Come with me. Openings: Vhils – “Dissonance’ @ Lazarides (London)

After showing at Lisbon’s Electricity Museum / EDP Foundation (covered) and in Paris (covered) over the last year, multidisciplinary Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto aka Vhils returned to London for a new solo entitled Dissonance at Lazarides Rathbone. Running until April 23rd, the exhibition reflects on how various factors in the contemporary urbanized world shapes its inhabitants, while personal identities are vanishing under the visual noise and surrounding clutter. Reflecting this, the subjects being portrayed in the pieces disappear through multiple layering of billboards and stratification on metal and wood. Check out images from the opening below.
