Moniker UK ’19 / Previews: Andrew Hem @ Thinkspace Gallery

Later this week, the Moniker Art Fair in London will be the venue for Andrew Hem’s (interviewed) latest solo showing. Presented by Thinkspace Gallery, the new acrylic paintings from the American artist continues his use of a vivid palette while painting imagery inspired by his heritage, travels, and street culture. This new body of work also sees Hem further explore his recent fascination with the meta “painting within a painting” motif which you can see above as well in other pieces below. With this year’s Moniker Art Fair in the UK opening soon, it’s time to look at some of the art soon to be on display. First up is a mini solo show from Josh Keyes (interviewed) showing with Thinkspace Gallery featuring his acrylic and panel pieces that deal the effects of humanity on our environment. Reoccurring themes and motifs abound in the new work including his renderings of statues, the natural world, underwater scenes, as well as juxtaposing graffiti in usual locations. Over the weekend, Schauwerk Sindelfingen in Sindelfingen opened the first retrospective exhibition in over 15 years in Germany from American artist Tom Sachs. A master of the DIY aesthetic, the New York-based artist is known for using his unique bricolage technique to remake motifs influenced by everyday culture, the consumer world, and history with common materials and found objects. Yesterday, master of impossible architectural creations, Alex Chinneck, unveiled his latest series of works across the UK. Entitled Alphabet Spaghetti, the new urban interventions takes an idea he has used before and applies it to the classic British post box. The three knotted pieces were installed in Norborough Road in Tinsley, Sheffield, outside Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy, in Margate, Kent, as part of Margate Now Festival, and outside Caxton Works in Canning Town, London. Streets: Super A @ POW! WOW! Rotterdam

Continuing to work in his recent distinctive style of unravelling cartoonish characters to revel their true world counterparts inside, Super A recently painted a new mural in the Netherlands. Created for the second edition of POW! WOW! Rotterdam, the wall from the Dutch artist features his version of Pinnochio and Jiminy Cricket with a little boy and insect inside. Releases: KAWS – “GONE” Figures

Later today (Sept 24th), 12 noon Eastern Time to be exact, KAWS will be releasing his latest vinyl collectible on his website. Modeled after a monumental new bronze sculpture recently revealed at his museum show at the National Gallery of Victoria, GONE will be offered in three different color ways. The sculpt first created for his show last year in New York (covered) features the Brooklyn-based artist’s famous Companion figure holding one of his BFF characters in a way that harkens back to Michelangelo’s Pietà.
