Nuart ’10: Blu & Ericailcane

It looks like this year’s Nuart Festival is finally underway in Norway. Blu continues his collaborations with big names, this time with Bologna based Ericailcane on the same building. Together, they take aim like other artists (Os Gemeos, Todd Schorr) at an easy target – the massive oil spill by BP in the Gulf of Mexico. Ironically, Stavanger is currently hosting ONS, one of the world’s largest oil and energy industry conferences. Keep it locked on AM as Vhils, ROA, Dolk, Evol, Alexandros Vasmoulakis, Sten […]

Preview: Tom French – “Hidden Realizations” @ Vincent Michael Gallery, Philly

When AM visited Tom French in his Newcastle Studio earlier this year, we discovered the artist deep within an experimental phase. Whilst Tom is recognized for his stunning charcoal figurative works, we witnessed the first stages of him working on a new layering technique involving his traditional drawing skills, but also combining multiple painted film layers over the drawings to present an extra level of depth and abstraction to his work. We also caught a glimpse of another part of Tom’s oeuvre as work in […]

Teaser: Aaron Horkey – “Midwestern Heart” @ Remick Gallery

Aaron Horkey, well known for his work on rock posters, intricate silkscreens, and Burlesque Design, is set to open a retrospective at the Remick Gallery in Minnesota on September 12th. The show in his hometown, which will include prints and originals from 2003-2010, is rumored to be the last from the popular Midwest artist and has many of his fans traveling long distances to attend the opening. Take a look at this sweet show poster featuring some his beloved typography. Discuss this show here.

Releases: KAWS – “Pinocchio & Jiminy Cricket” Figures

When we first confirmed the imminent release of KAWS’ Pinocchio & Jiminy Cricket figures back in June, we didn’t have any details yet as to the price or date of release. If you remember, these were first seen at the fantastic retrospective the Dos Sequis drinking artist put on at the Aldrich Contemporary in Connecticut. Well, now word is these will be released at the OriginalFake store in Tokyo on August 28th for approximately $200 with other associated retailers getting their shipment a couple weeks […]

Teaser: Amy Sol @ Corey Helford Gallery

Amy Sol (interviewed) recently posted an teaser image on her twitter of a new painting she started working on. She does have a solo show in October at the Corey Helford Gallery, so perhaps this is the beginnings of that new body of work. We’ll keep you posted. Discuss Amy Sol here.

Teaser: Andrew Hem @ Art San Diego Contemporary Art Fair

Our friend Amanda recently posted up an image of Andrew Hem’s (interviewed) sketchbooks, scattered gloriously about with pages open revealing this and that. In essence, these gouache “sketches” are mini-paintings and a selection will be available from LeBasse Projects at next month’s Art San Diego Contemporary Art Fair. As a whole, the work is a summary of Andrew’s many travels as he stops occasionally to paint a scene that impressed him for one reason or another. Via Erratic Phenomena. Discuss Andrew Hem here.

Openings: Zosen – “System Collapse” @ StolenSpace

StolenSpace’s latest exhibition opened last week and featured a solo exhibition by Zosen. “System Collapse” is the Barcelona based Argentinian artist’s first solo exhibit in the UK for which he presented a series of colorful character based canvases alongside some text based work, a video installation and some hand knitted pieces including a couple of these fun looking day-glo balaclavas. We’d love to see someone wearing one of these around town – could be essential winter-wear for the East London hipster brigade! AM’s favourite piece […]

LA Openings: Jean-Michel Basquiat – The Radiant Child

The film we heard first heard whispers of at Art Basel Miami last year is finally ready for its Los Angeles release tonight. Billed as the definitive documentary on Jean-Michel Basquiat, “The Radiant Child” (trailer) was filmed by close friend Tamra Davis before his untimely death in 1988 after which she stored the footage away for almost 20 years. There will be some special guests for some of the initial screenings, details after the jump…

Teaser: Kaws – “Wood Companion”

We’ve heard rumors of a wooden Companion figure from KAWS for a while now but haven’t seen any images… until now – from the recent Dos Sequis video! In these studio shots, the figure appears to be approximately 10 inches tall, but no word yet on general release details. We guess that KAWS fanatics, who have already been waiting for the Pinocchio & Jiminy Cricket figures to drop, will be adding this to their want list although this is sure to be limited and expensive. […]

Openings: Jonathan LeVine Gallery – “Annual Summer Invitational”

Last week, we stopped by Jonathan LeVine Gallery to hang out and catch their “Annual Summer Invitational” (previewed). The diverse group show consisted of artists who have never officially shown with the gallery and gave attendees of the gallery a different look at some different Low Brow and Street art action. We particularly enjoyed the Judith Supine, Andrew Hem (interviewed),  and EVOL pieces that were displayed. Catch it all after the jump.
