Previews: Ronit Baragna – “Embraced” @ Booth Gallery

On August 19th, Booth Gallery in New York will be opening a new solo show from Ronit Baragna entitled Embraced. The disturbing sculptures that the Israeli artist has prepared for the exhibition consist of her instantly recognizable tableware erupting with human fingers and mouths. The playful yet provocative pieces attempt to blur the lines between the inanimate and the alive, bringing to mind a scene from a surreal and macabre tea party. Discuss Ronit Baragna here.

Openings: Festival Iminente (London)

Festival Iminente (previewed) opened recently and will bring two days of art and music to London’s Brick Lane. The festival serves as both a celebration of Portuguese and pan-European culture and a warning of what may be lost as a result of the UK’s exit from the European Union. Vhil‘s cast concrete sculpture is based upon a sketch which he drew on a previous trip to the capital. Back in early 2000’s, when the internet was young, art blogs had not been invented and social networks weren’t even a concept yet. At this time, graphic artist James-Lee Duffy and writer Josh Jones came up with an idea to create a platform for alternative artists and writers to be published. Releases: Daniel Arsham x Adidas Originals Shoe

Over the weekend, Daniel Arsham teamed up with Adidas Originals to release a new shoe featuring his distinct aesthetic. The American artist’s version of their New York silhouette features an all white color, frayed edges, and the text “THE PAST IS PRESENT” along the side, which is only visible when placed underneath an ultraviolet light. For those familiar with Arsham’s work, these design cues fit in perfectly with his signature “future relic” vibe. Streets / Recap: North West Walls 2017

Last month, the 2017 edition of North West Walls (see 2016) wrapped up with new work from this year’s roster. Hoxxoh, Phlegm, Astro, Telmo Miel, Emmanuel Jarus, and Smates were invited in to painted stacked containers, a unique backdrop of the yearly summer rock festival in Belgium, Rock Werchter. Upcoming: Lisa Ericson @ Antler Gallery

On July 27th, Antler Gallery in Portland will present new surreal paintings from Lisa Ericson featuring her hybrid creatures of the natural world. The new body of work she has prepared for this exhibition seems to be centered upon”mobile habitats,” plants growing on the back of tortoises that can support other wild life such as butterflies, frogs, and other insects. Previews: “Small Works” @ BeinArt Gallery

On July 29th, BeinArt Gallery will be opening Small Works, a show featuring over 60 artists, the second installment in an annual group exhibition. The size of the pieces is limited to 10″ x 10″ and smaller with 5% from every purchase to the Australia’s Climate Council and will feature carbon offsetting on all shipping. Streets: Shepard Fairey x Vhils (Lisbon)

Just this weekend, Printed Matters, a show from Shepard Fairey (featured) opened at Underdogs in Lisbon, a gallery co-founded by the locally-based Vhils (interviewed). Their collaboration didn’t end there as the American and Portuguese street artists combined their artistic vision for a joint mural featuring Shep’s iconic imagery and Vhils unique mark-making.
