Events: Sketch Tuesday @ 111 Minna

On the last Tuesday of September, AM visited 111 Minna Gallery for their monthly installment of Sketch Tuesdays.  Originally held a once a year at Southern Exposure under the moniker “Moniker Drawing Rally”, the event has now grown to a monthly event featuring an ever changing cast of Bay Area artists.  November’s installment of Sketch Tuesdays fell on the eve of 111 Minna‘s “Neighborhoods” show (opening/setup) and featured many of the “Neighborhoods” artists.  In attendance were such SF luminaries as Mike Giant, Matt Furie, N8 […]

Openings: Ron English – “Nimbus Vapor” @ Opera Gallery

Ron English has been a busy man since his show at Elm’s Lester (studio visit and opening). Last month, he “tagged” the skyline of NYC with clouds (here) in preparation for his curated show “Nimbus Vapor” at Opera Gallery (previewed). Last week AM attended the opening of Ron’s curated take on the most important street artists of our time consisting of a hall of fame lineup consisting of names such as Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Banksy, Blek Le Rat, Daze, Crash, Shepard Fairey (featured), Faile, Futura, Logan […]

Baby Tattooville ’09: KMNDZ (Part II)

One of the big surprises of Baby Tattooville this year was the big reveal of who would walk home with the huge KMNDZ painting we previously told you about. After a dramatic explanation of the raffle by Bob Self, everyone came and picked a small envelope after which everyone opened at the same time. Imagine the chaos that ensued when each individual attendee was lead to believe they were the winner. As you can see from the video above, it turns out everyone was a […]

Openings / Giveaway: Adam Neate – “A New Understanding” @ Elms Lesters

Adam Neate’s much anticipated solo show “A New Understanding” opened last night at Elms Lesters Painting Rooms and AM went along to see just where Adam’s new direction had taken him. After revealing to us in our recent interview that he’d been through some troubled times during the creation of this work, we were pleased to see him in good spirits happily chatting to fans and collectors whilst signing an almost endless stream of books and posters. His classic and recognizable self portrait profile made […]

Interviews / Preview: Esao Andrews – “Farewell Avery” @ Thinkspace Gallery

It’s been a while since Esao Andrews has had a major show and for his many fans, it’s long overdue. Since his showing with Roq La Rue last May, he’s been relatively off the grid – most likely getting ready for this year’s show “Farewell Avery” at Thinkspace, opening TONIGHT. It seems like it has been time well spent because this new body of work took our breath away. Even though we teased you with a peak at “The Conjoined Bell”, we had no idea […]

Preview / Setup: “Beyond Eden” Art Fair

The “Beyond Eden” Art Fair we mentioned to you last month is set to open to the public tomorrow and run through the weekend (with some VIP previews on Friday).  This multi-gallery event held at the LA Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park will include live painting, a screening of the Scribble 08 documentary, a special “Heroes & Villains” photo exhibition, and of course, lots of art. We will be especially looking forward to seeing several pieces from Amy Sol (seen above) for her upcoming […]

Interviews: Eric White

Following on from our recent studio visit with Eric White, we put some questions to the Brooklyn based painter ahead of his New York solo show “LP” at Sloan Fine Art. AM thought that the concept he had behind the work was captivating – reworked album covers that carried an influence for the artist before he got his first CD player back in 1983 – all in a 12 inch square format, of course. This is Eric’s first NYC solo since the phenomenal “Who Are […]

Showing: JR – “Women Are Heroes” (Nuit Blanche – Paris)

AM stopped by the Nuit Blanche festival in Paris and got to catch the tail end of JR and crew wheat pasting their ginormous photo installations for his “Women are Heroes” (previewed) show which is part of his 28 Millimetre project (We were wondering how he got to the lower parts of the bridges). We also took in the city via boat to tour the streets to enjoy the photographic installations that graced many parts of the “City of Love.” As mentioned previously, this phase […]

Preview: Ana Bagayan – “Critters” @ Roq La Rue

Go big… that’s what Ana Bagayan (featured) is aiming for with this show apparently. We were impressed with the larger scale and the amount of detail she put into the paintings she created for this Seattle show. This Friday, her new body of work, “Critters” will open up alongside Tin (interviewed) & Ryan Heshka at Roq La Rue. AM has a preview of the latest set of paintings from this very talented artist to share with you after the jump…
