Preview: Travis Louie – “Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Monster” @ Roq La Rue

As we previously mentioned, opening tonight in Seattle is “Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Monster,” Travis Louie’s (interviewed) solo at the esteemed Roq La Rue gallery.  The artist will be in attendance to chat with fans as well as sign his new book “Curiosities” like he did in LA recently and in SDCC.  On display will be his portraiture mix of wild-haired intense women and distinguished monsters in Victorian guise. Auction: Polaroid Collection via Sotheby’s

Now that the Polaroid Corporation has gone into bankruptcy, it leaves behind a legacy not only in your fond childhood memories of snapping away your day’s activities without a care, but also in an important collection of instant photographs by some of the best artists of the 20th century.  In an effort to raise money to pay their creditors, that collection will soon head into auction courtesy of Sotheby’s, with the remaining pieces to be sold via private sales. Preview: Mode 2 – “Reality, Fantasy, And The Web” @ Lazarides (Newcastle)

Lazarides will be opening a show tonight, August 21st, at their Newcastle location, featuring influential street artist Mode 2.  Returning to the UK from a “self-exile” in Paris, he will be exhibiting new paintings and installations, as well as a selection of sketches on display on ground floor of the gallery.  Judging from these preview images from Ian Cox, it’s shaping up to be a pretty good show.  More images after the jump…

Update: Josh Keyes – “Natural Selection” @ Swarm Gallery

Remember how there was a fourth painting yet to be revealed at the time Josh Keyes‘ (interviewed) show opened at Swarm Gallery (covered). Well, here it is – “Drifting.” Now, we all have to wait until probably January before we can get our next Keyes fix when he opens his show at Jonathan Levine entitled “Kaleidoscope.” Discuss this show here. Video: Word to Mother, Hera, & Chris Stain @ Nuart 2008

Our friend Ian Cox, whose photos we referenced for our preview of this year’s Nuart Festival, also recently put together a time-lapse video of Word to Mother (interviewed) putting up a piece from Nuart 2008. Charity: Craola x American Cancer Society Auction

For those curious about the piece that Greg “Craola” Simkins (interviewed) was working on at his skatedeck/livepainting event at Gallery 1988 LA (covered) in June, AM has an update for you. The 36″ x 24″ finished piece entitled “The Good Soul” will be auctioned off via Ebay with all proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society in memory of Jensen’s (owner of g1988) late father, and huge Greg Simkins fan, Lawrence Karp. Releases: Ray Caesar – “French Kiss”

Ray Caesar is one of the rare digital artists out there that gets props when compared to the more traditional artists. This is not surprising to anyone who has ever seen his fantastic work in person like this newest piece from him entitled “French Kiss.” These will be offered as an edition of 20 and measure 32″ x 42″ for those interested. After spending his creative energy curating the fantastic “Worlds on Fire” show for the Grammys in February, Kris Lewis is getting set to open his own solo show in Denver.  Opening this Saturday, August 22nd at the David B. Smith Gallery, Kris’ new show will feature about 15 new paintings. More images after the jump.
