Continuing with our coverage of Shepard Fairey’s pending trip to DC, we now have the images that will be exhibited at the Regime Change Starts at Home show at the Irvine Contemporary Gallery.Â Shepard will have 9 new paintings and collage on paper pieces for the exhibition.Â Included is the LAST of three unique hand stenciled collaged portraits of Barack Obama’s campaign icon: “Hope”. Preview: Hisashi Tenmyouya @ Mizuma Gallery

On October 15, Tokyo’s Mizuma Gallery will open Fighting Spirit, a new show by one of contemporary Japanese art’s shooting stars, Hisashi Tenmyouya. Tenmyouya’s work fuses Western pop culture (e.g., hip-hop, video games, movies) with Japanese traditional themes and techniques, comparable perhaps to what Kehinde Wiley does with African American culture and classical European art. For Fighting Spirit, Tenmyouya will be showing eight new paintings, including his largest work to date, in addition to works on paper. The show runs through Nov. 15.

One of our favorite artists, Travis Louie, is opening a three-person show tonight at the Shooting Gallery. Louie’s technique must be quite complicated as he is able to paint photorealistic images of his imaginary creatures. Along with Aya Takano and Chiho Aoshima, Ai Yamaguchi was one of the young, up-and-coming female Japanese artists involved in Takashi Murakami’s Tokyo Girls Bravo exhibition in 1999. Unlike the other two, however, Yamaguchi severed her connection with Kaikai Kiki and went her own way. Since then, she has done quite well for herself, showing her Japanese animation-style depictions of Edo-period geishas at galleries around the world, publishing beautiful silkscreen prints and collaborating with the Japanese cosmetics brand Shu Uemura. Arrested Motion first encountered the luscious and colorful work of Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes at an art fair a few years ago and naively mistook it for that of Ryan McGinness. But where McGinness’ work is graphic, Milhazes’ is decorative; where McGinness’ work is based in the mind, Milhazes’ is based in the heart. Over the last several shows, it is becoming more apparent that Brendan Monroe is in the middle of a transition period. Although it can be argued that all artists are constantly evolving and technically always in “transition,” most collectors have noticed less and less figurative elements to his work.
