Last showing a striking, large scale painting at Art HK back in May, Japanese contemporary artist Masakatsu Sashie is this time participating in a group exhibition in his home country. Moon, which opened on the 28th, saw a slight departure from the artist’s signature orb paintings, or perhaps more accurately a return of sorts to the hybrid machine compositions more relevant to the his early work. A couple weeks ago, Paula Cooper Gallery opened a rare exhibition of works by Roy Lichtenstein from his celebrated Entablatures series. Serving as a departure from the signature spotted, comic-inspired pop art he carved his artistic niche upon in the early 1960’s, the paintings are based around the subject of “entablatures”; ornamental features found on classical building facades. A couple of weeks back AM went along to take a look at Meggs‘ first London solo exhibition entitled Inner Demons. Hosted by Zero Cool at pop-up space Red Bull Studios, Meggs pulled together a collection of work from the many facets of his output using a combination of paintings, sculpture, assemblage and an intense installation comprising a demonic masked figure seated amidst a variety of porn, hooker calling cards, spent blunts, Chinese hell money, a crack pipe and emptied bottles of alcohol. AM has been keeping a watchful eye on Continental European shows featuring works by Barry McGee. Whenever the cashflow gods have been on our side, we’ve booked the necessary flights or trains to attend as well. Kai & Sunny’s third solo show at Stolenspace just got an extra week’s extension to its run and now is open until Sunday 3rd July. AM stopped by last week to take a look at The Flower Show and meet up with the design duo. We recently went by Muriel Guepin Gallery to check out French-born, Brooklyn-based artist Supakitch’s (featured) first major NYC exhibition, entitled Based on a True Story, which is up through the end of July. For the show, Supa presented mostly new paintings on canvas and works on handmade paper that featured his characteristic bold colors, fine line-work and music-inspired compositions. After ten straight days of painting, albeit with the help of some university art students, Dalek (interviewed) has completed a massive four panel, site-specific installation within the Birmingham Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Alabama. Last week at their Central Hong Kong space, Gagosian Gallery opened an exhibition of work from New York-based contemporary artist Richard Prince.
