Showing: The Toaster – ‘Toasted’ @ Jealous Gallery

The Toaster art collective have opened a ‘pop-up’ exhibition at Jealous Gallery in London. Following on from pioneers such as Goldie and Dicy, The Toasters emerged out of the Black Country graffiti scene in the UK in the late 1990s. Their work has seen them reproduce their image of the seemingly mundane toaster on a global scale with Toaster flags being flown at the Glastonbury Festival, Toaster road markings being painted along the route of the Tour de France and postal stickers being stuck up […]

Showing: Jaune – “I Wish You Could See This For Real” @ Vroom and Varossieau

On 21st of January, Vroom and Varossieau in Amsterdam opened a solo exhibition by Belgium street artist and urban interventionist Jaune. I Wish You Could See This For Real includes a series of new stencil-based pieces along with site specific installation that the artist created in the gallery. Using sanitation workers as his main characters, his work is always focused on the paradox between the visible and the invisible. The inspiration for the work comes from Jaune’s own experience while working in the profession. While cleaning the street of his hometown, he […]

Showing: Gee Vaucher – “Introspective” @ Firstsite

Gee Vaucher has recently opened an exhibition entitled Introspective at Firstsite in Colchester. This is the first major show of her art in the UK and it spans the last 50 years of the multi-disciplinary artist’s practice. The work from the first half of her career is characterized by searing political satire, which was intended as a force for social change. This included publishing the nihilist newspaper International Anthem and working for the New York Times, where she first started using collage. Her continuing relevance […]

Megumi Ogita Gallery in Tokyo is currently showing their second exhibition with Chris Berens. Openings: Ryan Hewett – ‘Order’ @ Unit London

South African artist Ryan Hewett (interviewed) has returned to London for a new solo show at The Unit London entitled Order featuring a new series of expressive and semi-abstract portraits. Depicted figures include himself as well as Egon Schiele, Marcel Duchamp, Lucien Freud, Samuel Beckett, and Audrey Hepburn. Unlike his 2015 solo show Untitled in which he created deliberately chaotic and semi-abstract portraits of famous figures, the new body of work is more planned and focused with abstract strokes and a textured pasto technique. Last week, London’s Lazarides Rathbone opened a new solo show from Zevs entitled The Big Oil Splash. The new series of paintings (many featuring his iconic drips), monochromes and sculptures continue the French artist’s not so subtle criticism of humanity’s deleterious effects on the environment as well as our consumer-focused society. Take a look at more photos from the show (running through Sept 1st) below… Photos via the gallery & Not Banksy Forum. Showing: Taylor McKimens – “Swapping Paint” @ Dio Horia

Athens’ Dio Horia gallery recently hosted Taylor McKimens in their one month long residency program where he created a whole new series of paintings that are currently on view. Swapping Paint continues his recent Stoic Youth show (covered), which also explored his take on Hellenistic art. Utilizing the figurative part of his imagery as a repeating theme, the NY-based artist focused instead on the background, colorways, patterns, and the surrounding abstract elements. Combining old and the new in technique, medium, and style, the work on display break the boundaries of collage, painting and drawing. Wanting authentic […]

Showing: Amanda Marie – “Make Believe” & Hyland Mather – “Receiver” @ JR Gallery

On June 3rd, JR Gallery in Berlin opened Make Believe and Receiver, a joint show from two artists and partners in crime, Amanda Marie and Hyland Mather (AKA X-O). Exhibiting next to each other, Marie will be showing her hypnotic illustrative stenciled imagery next to Hyland’s geometric bricolage assemblages made from found materials. Though very different in their styles, the works of the two American artists living in Amsterdam complement each other due to their folk art influence and the color palette used. With pastel and earth tones, both bodies of work […]
