Teaser: “Margaret Kilgallen: Summer / Selections” @ Ratio3

Influential Mission School artist Margaret Kilgallen will be featured at the Ratio3 Gallery in San Francisco at the end of the month. Entitled Margaret Kilgallen: Summer / Selections, The show will feature works on paper and paintings on canvas, some never before seen from the late Bay Area painter. The selected pieces will be prime examples of her use of delicate and folkloric imagery and will be her first solo exhibition in SF in over 13 years. Don’t miss the June 23rd opening. Discuss this show here.

Teaser: “Pretty on the Inside” @ Paul Kasmin

Later this month, the Paul Kasmin Gallery will host the opening of Pretty on the Inside, a show curated by KAWS and Erik Parker. To our knowledge, this is the first time KAWS has flexed his curatorial chops since I Can’t Feel My Face exhibition in Los Angeles in 2009 (covered). Along with the two curators, the other artists they chose to join them are Todd James, Tony Matelli, Joyce Pensato, Peter Saul, and Karl Wirsum. See  you there on June 23rd. Discuss KAWS here.

Teaser: Daniel Danger @ Cotton Candy Machine

Fans of printmaking should head over to the Cotton Candy Machine in New York on July 8th.  Tara McPherson’s boutique and art gallery will be hosting a solo show from Daniel Danger (interviewed). The New England based artist recently sent our friends at OMG Poster a look at some of the screenprints that will be available (seen above and after the jump). Daniel will be attending the opening in person and no doubt will also be bringing along rock posters and originals featuring his melancholic look at old […]

Set-up / Teasers: Retna – ‘The Hallelujah World Tour’ (London) @ The Dairy

Retna has been keeping himself busy recently — among other things, by participating in the Art in the Streets exhibition at MOCA, Street Cred at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, and painting the tail of a business jet in Geneva for VistaJet. He’s currently in the UK for the London limb of his Hallelujah World Tour which began in New York City in February (featured).  The pop-up event is being held at the Dairy, with the opening taking place on the evening of Wednesday […]

Teasers: Kaws – “Passing Through” Companion @ The Standard (New York)

All right kids, Kaws is coming back to homebase for the summer. The huge companion statue showcased recently at the The Aldrich Contemporary Museum will be stopping by the meatpacking district of Manhattan. We first saw this giant companion in the Hong Kong Passing Through exhibition (covered). Now we get to enjoy this at the front yard of The Standard Hotel New York. The figure will be available for viewing starting tomorrow June 8th and will run until October. Discuss Kaws here.

Teaser: Takashi Murakami @ Gagosian (London)

It’s been over two years since we attended the opening for a Takashi Murakami show at the Gagosian in London. At the end of June, fans in the UK will again have a chance to enjoy the Superflat master’s work in person, this time at the Britannia Street space. After a showing with the blue-chip gallery at Art Hong Kong this week, Mr. Kaikai Kiki will certainly start focusing on his next new body of work.  No word yet on what will be on display […]

Teaser: Art HK ’11 – Yoshitomo Nara @ Blum & Poe

For the fourth edition of the premier contemporary Asian art fair, with weight only being added to the significance of the growing event in the wake of the Art Basel founders’ recent purchase of the fair, Blum & Poe will make their presence known at Art HK ’11 with an impressive lineup of artists. Arguably, leading the charge for the Los Angeles contemporary art powerhouse will be a selection of work from Yoshitomo Nara, who we last saw during his retrospective, Nobody’s Fool (covered), at […]

Teaser: Art HK ’11 – Masakatsu Sashie @ Mizuma Gallery

Exhibiting with Mizuma Gallery, Masakatsu Sashie might very well steal the show with his newest creation destined for Art HK 2011, Asia’s preeminent art fair running from May 26th -29th. Producing a work with imagery that references the devastation left in wake of the massive earthquake and tsunami in his home country, the Japanese artist eerily conceived of the post-apocalyptic composition and began painting the piece prior to the disaster. A chilling, if unwanted, example of art imitating life, or in this case foreshadowing. Much […]

Teaser: Richard Prince @ Gagosian Gallery (HK)

As an enticing preamble to Asia’s preeminent contemporary art fair, Art HK 11, on tap later this week, Gagosian Gallery will offer up an exhibition of work from Richard Prince at their Central Hong Kong space. Opening Tuesday, May 24th, the show will mark the first solo exhibition in Asia for the iconic, if not controversial, photographer, painter, and serial reappropriator, as seen through his infamous “rephotograph” series. It is this penchant for reappropriation that has defined, and at times troubled, his artistic career, most […]

Teaser: Art HK’11 – KAWS @ Emmanuel Perrotin

Here’s a look at something KAWS is working on (reminiscent of a piece he painted for the gallery last November) for the Emmanuel Perrotin booth at this year’s Art Hong Kong. After stirring up the fanboys with news of an imminent wood Karimoku companion release, the street turned contemporary artist follows up with news that he will be unleashing his double x’s at the vital Asian fair, a wise choice considering the market. Discuss KAWS here.
