Teaser: D*Face – “Going Nowhere Fast” @ Corey Helford

It sounds like D*Face (interviewed) will be spending some extended time in Los Angeles soon as he will be showing at the Corey Helford in April and during BritWeek in May (with Mear One). For this new body of work entitled Going Nowhere Fast, D will be immortalizing the deaths of America’s most illustrious icons from Andy Warhol to Michael Jackson with paintings, sculptures and installations. Teaser: Ai Weiwei – “Circle of Animals/Zodiac” @ Grand Army Plaza (Central Park)

Chinese conceptual artist and dissident Ai Weiwei, whose studio was recently demolished by the Chinese government, apparently didn’t have his bronze Zodiac Heads in storage there at the time.  The pieces which originally exhibited at the 29th Sao Paulo Biennale in Brazil last year will be making a trip to the Big Apple come May.  The twelve sculptures represent the traditional Chinese zodiac that adorn the fountain-clock of Yuanming Yuan, an imperial retreat in Beijing, five of which were looted and whose location is currently […]

Teaser: Kent Williams @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Kent Williams, who recently showcased a fantastic body of work in New Mexico (covered), is already working on some paintings for a new solo scheduled for May in Los Angeles. The show planned for Merry Karnowsky Gallery will include this painting, New Spring, currently on display at the LCAD MFA Faculty and Students Exhibition in Irvine, CA. Another probable piece after the jump…

Entitled Revolutions, the body of work on display will feature over 80 pieces of punk, rock, new wave, jazz, and hip-hop inspired artwork based on the 12″ record cover format.  Also, two limited edition album cover print box sets will be released in conjunction with the exhibition. See what Shep had to say about the show […]

Teaser / Setup: Armory Week ’11 – Jim Houser (Jonathan LeVine booth @ VOLTA)

Showing with Jonathan LeVine at the VOLTA satellite fair (also see Mark Jenkins & Richard Colman) at this year’s Armory Week will be Jim Houser. Judging from all the setup action we see, attendees can look forward to very nice installation which is typical for the Philadelphia-based artist (ie last year’s Subliminal Projects show).  AM loves his quilt-like blocks of imagery and look forward to seeing new symbology added to his lexicon.

Teaser: Kris Lewis @ David B. Smith Gallery

We last talked to Kris Lewis (interviewed) at last year’s Grammy group show which he co-curated and also in 2009 before his show at David B. Smith Gallery. Time flies as he’s scheduled again for a solo exhibition in May at the Colorado showspace with a new body of work; the piece above being the first piece we have seen.  If that is any indication, we are in for a great show.  We’ll have more to follow as the show draws nearer. Discuss Kris Lewis […]

Teaser: Armory Week ’11 – Richard Colman – “Can’t Get There From Here” (V1 booth @ VOLTA)

With Armory Week in New York set to start tomorrow, we wanted to let you know about a couple more artists to look out for.  Take a look at this floor piece for an install Richard Colman (interviewed) has planned for the V1 booth at VOLTA. If you remember, it looks like the same one he used for his immersive show at Guerrero Gallery back in October. Keep it locked on AM of course as we will be bringing you on-site coverage of all the […]

Teaser: Armory Week ’11 – KAWS @ Honor Fraser

In the first extensive display of work since his Paris solo last fall, Pay the Debt to Nature (covered), Brooklyn-based artist, KAWS, will only need to send his work over the bridge this time, destined for Honor Fraser’s booth at The Armory Show. The street art icon turned contemporary art mainstay will offer a solo presentation of his pop-infused minimalistic work with the Los Angeles gallery, including a collection of new paintings – like a series of abstract “button”-like round panels – as well a […]
