This Saturday night, March 8th, the Last Rites in New York will be presenting a group exhibition where 40 artists were asked to interpret the gallery’s namesake. The ancient ritual which dates back centuries in Catholicism continues to be practiced in modern times on those about to die and has been a concept seen in the work of many artists in the past. Showing: Johnson Tang – “Living Clay” @ Yingge Ceramics Museum

Currently on view through January 19th in Taiwan is an exhibition featuring the surreal sculptures of Johnson Tsang. Entitled Living Clay, the exhibition sees the Hong Kong-based ceramic artist present a full repertoire of works at the Yingge Ceramics Museum including his whimsical takes on functional objects with characters in fluid play with the forms. Along with these fun pieces, Tsang also tackles social political issues like war, violence, and the influence of media in our children. Take a look at more photos below… Via Colassal.

On the 22nd of November, The Outsiders in Newcastle opened a solo by Chinese born artist DALeast (interviewed). For this show, the South Africa-based painter created six large canvases, as well as six matching pen on paper studies, a video installation, and an exclusive limited edition etching created at gallery’s print studio. The title of the show, REDOK, is the phonetic English spelling for a Tibetan expression of hope and fear, two emotions that rule lives. For our latest Art Focus feature, we bring you the somber oil paintings of Taiwanese artist Lo Chen Pang. Represented by Aki Gallery, the painter has already been awarded the Union Culture & Art Foundation Young Artist Award, The Chi-Mei Art Cultivation Award, and the first prize from the Kaohsiung Awards. Last month, we shared with you photos of a mural that Kenny Scharf (interviewed) painted in Los Angeles on the Davis Brothers’ Tire Pros building in Culver City. Recently, the New York street legend revisited the location and blessed the north wall of the structure with more of his signature imagery. As you can see in the photos above of the project (arranged by Branded Arts), he also posed one of the cars in front that he has been painting for his fans bi-coastally in an ongoing project. It looks like Chinese artist Liu Bolin was back in New York again recently since the last time he was in the Big Apple when we hung out with him and JR as they worked on an interesting collaborative project together. While in town for his current exhibition at Eli Klein Fine Art, site of his show in 2012 (covered), the photographer and painter decided to stop by 5Pointz Aerosol Arts Center, in an area of Queens which has heavy graffiti presence. Meggs for The Hundreds

If you remember, Australian artist Meggs was in town for a solo exhibition currently showing in Los Angeles at the Thinkspace Gallery (covered). While here, he also was asked to paint a mural at The Hundreds warehouse complex (also see Stephen Harrington). The piece features a skull in hand rendered in his signature comic-inspired style. POW WOW ’13: Shark Toof & Angry Woebots

Another wall that was shared during POW WOW this year was the side of Fresh Cafe & Loft In Space, center of much of the activity surrounding the event. Getting up at this location were the LA-based artists Shark Toof and Angry Woebots with their signature characters (sharks and pandas) looking fierce.
