Continuing AM’s tour of Hong Kong, we made a stop at the Art Hong Kong International Art Fair. This vanguard Asian fair brings together top notch exhibitors from over 110 galleries. Much like our visits to Basel Miami and Armory NYC, in Hong Kong we experienced and saw work from some of the best talents in the art world. Last night, AM was lucky enough to be on hand to experience Jose Parla’s latest body of work Reading Through Seeing (previewed) which opened in Hong Kong at Oos Botos Gallery. Parla’s much anticipated return to Asia didn’t disappoint as he produced a gorgeous body of work on a variety of mediums: canvas, wood, ceramic and paper. Unperturbed by the theft of the first spinning prayer wheel (close-up feature) they placed in Williamsburg last month, Brooklyn based collective Faile have again installed another one of their beautiful, hand-carved prayer wheels in New York. With these prayer wheels selling for upwards of $20k at Faile’s “Lost in Glimmering Shadows†(covered) show last year, this awesome street piece probably won’t last for long. We heard a rumor that the economy is not well and the art market is hurting. Apparently, the folks attending Sotheby’s Contemporary Day auction don’t agree. Today’s sale yielded solid results, with 337 lots pulling in over 21.5 million USD. Among the amazing lineup of artists, such as Warhol, Basquiat, Kippenberger and Cy Twombly, AM noted the inclusion of two iconic names from the “Urban Art” genre: Shepard Fairey and Banksy. Jeff Soto makes his United Kingdom debut this week with his solo show entitled “The Inland Empire” (teased) opening Thursday, May 14th, at Stolenspace. AM caught up with Soto ahead of the show to try and understand how the show came together, the symbolism and meaning behind his new work and how fatherhood has changed his career as an artist. The vaults under Waterloo Station have been taken over by artistic director Kevin Spacey and his team from the Old Vic Theatre for their latest venture: Tunnel 228. A very cool “pop up” art show and theatre experience that seems to have come out of nowhere. Fresh off his “Amused Loon” show last October at Joshua Liner, Damon Soule returns to his former stomping grounds with a new body of work. Entitled “Same Loud No“, Soule’s triumphant return to the Bay Area (his last show was in ’06) boasts a bevy of geometrics, prime numbers, acid casualties and other-worldy existence. Australian up-and-comer Melissa Haslam visits Los Angeles for her latest exhibition “Wild Fields” at LeBasse Projects opening this Saturday, May 9th, in the gallery’s project room. Her interesting use of independent girls and hauntingly beautiful botanic backdrops has caused quite a buzz with fans and collectors.
