Preview / Setup: “Beyond Eden” Art Fair

The “Beyond Eden” Art Fair we mentioned to you last month is set to open to the public tomorrow and run through the weekend (with some VIP previews on Friday).  This multi-gallery event held at the LA Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park will include live painting, a screening of the Scribble 08 documentary, a special “Heroes & Villains” photo exhibition, and of course, lots of art. We will be especially looking forward to seeing several pieces from Amy Sol (seen above) for her upcoming […]

Interviews: Eric White

Following on from our recent studio visit with Eric White, we put some questions to the Brooklyn based painter ahead of his New York solo show “LP” at Sloan Fine Art. AM thought that the concept he had behind the work was captivating – reworked album covers that carried an influence for the artist before he got his first CD player back in 1983 – all in a 12 inch square format, of course. This is Eric’s first NYC solo since the phenomenal “Who Are […]

Showing: JR – “Women Are Heroes” (Nuit Blanche – Paris)

AM stopped by the Nuit Blanche festival in Paris and got to catch the tail end of JR and crew wheat pasting their ginormous photo installations for his “Women are Heroes” (previewed) show which is part of his 28 Millimetre project (We were wondering how he got to the lower parts of the bridges). We also took in the city via boat to tour the streets to enjoy the photographic installations that graced many parts of the “City of Love.” As mentioned previously, this phase […]

Preview: Greg Gossel – “Broken” @ The Soo Visual Art Center

Greg Gossel, fresh off his “Happy Endings” show at The Shooting Gallery (covered), recently sent us these new photos of him preparing for his latest solo show, “Broken” at the Soo Visual Art Center in Minneapolis.  Featuring 20 new works on wood, panel and canvas, Greg will also be creating a large site-specific installation for “Broken” which opens this Friday, Oct. 9th.  More preview pictures after the jump.

Preview: Ana Bagayan – “Critters” @ Roq La Rue

Go big… that’s what Ana Bagayan (featured) is aiming for with this show apparently. We were impressed with the larger scale and the amount of detail she put into the paintings she created for this Seattle show. This Friday, her new body of work, “Critters” will open up alongside Tin (interviewed) & Ryan Heshka at Roq La Rue. AM has a preview of the latest set of paintings from this very talented artist to share with you after the jump…

Baby Tattooville ’09: Yoskay Yamamoto Reverse Studio Visit

Amidst all the releases, events and activities that took place during Baby Tattooville ’09, the one event that really provided true insight into the technical and creative processes of the participating artists was the organized Reverse Studio Visits.  For their visits, the artists (in this case Yoskay Yamamoto, Audrey Kawasaki, Greg “Craola” Simkins, Miss Mindy and Elizabeth McGrath) brought in-process works with them to BT ’09, spending an hour each painting and providing a behind the scenes peek at how they work in their studios.  […]

Benefit: Gary Baseman Drawing for Cultural Canvas Thailand

It’s always great fun to catch up with friends/artists at events like Baby Tattooville. In fact, enjoyed ourselves so much with Gary Baseman and gang that we almost forgot to mention his benefit auction for Cultural Canvas Thailand – a Thai art charity looks to help single mothers and children. Gary has generously donated an awesome drawing measuring 6 feet x 3 feet for this cause. Check out the auction here, but hurry cause this ends a little after midnight tonight. See the detailed pics after the jump.

Interviews: Adam Neate – “A New Understanding” @ Elms Lesters

Adam Neate’s second solo show, “A New Understanding” will be opening at Elms Lesters this Friday, October 9th.  From what we have seen from this body of work, it looks like Neate is really continuing to blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture with his use of found materials such as cardboard, metal and perspex.  In our exclusive interview, Neate discusses his upcoming show, which has been in the making for over two years, plus much more.  Full interview and preview images after the jump….

Video: Murakami x McG x Dunst – “Akihabara Majokko Princess” in “Pop Life” @ the Tate Modern

When we brought you a first look (here) at the A-list “Pop Life” exhibition at the Tate Modern yesterday, we neglected to mention that the short film “Akihabara Majokko Princess” from Murakami was included. Created in collaboration with one of Hollywood’s hottest directors, McG (Charlies Angels & Terminator Salvation), the video is yet another extension of Takashi’s renowned short film artform which previously featured Louis Vuitton, Inochi, & Kanye West. Starring Kirsten Dunst singing a cover to the Vapors’ “Turning Japanese”, the video includes footage of Dunst dancing through the […]

Our friend Frankie from Campbarbossa sent over some images from Holly Thoburn’s studio as she prepares for her joint show with Peter Michael.  Entitled “Metropolis,” the show opens on October 22nd at the Sesame Gallery in London.  For this new body of work, Thoburn will be painting derelict walls and abstract imagery inspired by her extensive travels and photographs of urban environments. More images after the jump…
