Video/Preview: Barry McGee @ Biennale de Lyon

This year’s Biennale de Lyon will be opening soon with the theme of “The Spectacle of Everyday.” Curated by SF based Hou Hanru, it’s not surprising that this year Barry McGee will be participating in the annual art event in Lyon, the second largest metropolitan area (behind Paris) in the heart of France (Sept 16th – Jan 3rd). Take a look at glimpses of McGee hard at work creating one of the fantastic installations he is famous for in the video above. Discuss Barry McGee […]

Openings: D*Face – “Ludovico Aversion Therapy/All Your Dreams Belong To Us” @ Jonathan LeVine

On Friday, AM had the pleasure of attending the private viewing of D*Face’s debut U.S. solo show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Following the sneak preview we got from interviewing him and visiting his studio in London, it was hard to sit still and wait for the curtains to come up to enjoy the full body of work and installations. Opening alongside of Mark Dean Veca (more on that later), there were plenty of peers in attendance – Kaws, Stash, Eric Haze, to name a few. […]

Openings: Camille Rose Garcia – “The Hydra of Babylon” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Our little art world celebrated one of its brightest stars last night when Camille Rose Garcia opened her show “The Hydra of Babylon” (setup) at Merry Karnowsky Gallery. Fans, collectors, artists and well-wishers turned out in droves to take in the Los Angeles based surrealist artist’s paintings, embellished drawings, murals, plushes and some nice little jar pieces. Garcia’s latest body of work explored the ideas of ecological collapse and human catastrophe along with the healing power of nature. Her bold new colors mixed with her […]

Preview: Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Art Auction

Fifteen years is a long time. For a magazine & brand that pioneered coverage of art that nobody else wanted to cover, Juxtapoz has come a long way. Humble websites like ours probably would not be around if not for their efforts to expose our generation to artists who otherwise would not have gotten any publicity. So imagine what a treasure trove of works they will be able to come up with for a 15th Anniversary Auction. We are salivating just thinking about it. The […]

Fame Festival: Blu Time-Lapse

Remember that mural we told you about that Blu worked on at the Fame Festival several weeks ago? Well, there is a nice video out now that shows the time-lapse of him working the massive political statement. With the opening only a week away, we can’t wait to see all the finished street and gallery pieces from all the artists, but we are especially interested to see if the “graffiti-animation” Blu is working on can match the energy of “Muto.” Discuss Blu here. Discuss the FAME […]

Teaser: SHAG – “Autumn’s Come Undone” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Looks like SHAG (interviewed) will be channeling some Hieronymus Bosch for his solo show at Corey Helford in November.  The exhibiton entitled “Autumn’s Come Undone” will be his first at the Culver City gallery and will presumably have some pieces paying tribute to the famous 15th century painter.  Another image after the jump…

Openings: Ryan McGinley – “Moonmilk” @ Alison Jacques Gallery

The anticipation that has been built up over the past few months by Ryan McGinley, starting with his few teaser pieces at Art Basel, has finally culminated in the opening of his first solo show in over a year. Arguably the best photographer of his generation and one of the freshest talents today, McGinley debuted a exhibition of 24 new photographs ranging in size from the manageable 9″x14″ to the spectacularly impressive 110″x72″. More photos from opening night after the jump…

Preview: Evan Hecox – “The Last Thousand Years” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

This is a show that we’ve been waiting patiently for. Evan Hecox is finally visiting New York and taking over the entire Joshua Liner Gallery. Only Tomokazu Matsuyama (covered) and AIKO (covered) has been bold enough to create a large enough body of work which utilizes the entire gallery space. Known for eye-catching urban landscapes of various locales around the world, Evan has a knack for bringing even the most mundane places to life. For his first solo with the gallery, Evan’s focus will be of […]
