Openings: David Choe – “Death Blossom” @ PYO Gallery Beijing

Yesterday, David Choe unveiled his latest series of works in Beijing at PYO Gallery. As you saw in the preview, David hit the streets of China hard. David showed ingenuity by utilizing whatever he could get his hands on to create complex pieces out of asian cargo and shopping bags, local “yuan” currency, vintage communist era posters and even a badminton shuttlecock! The show had fantastic installation pieces in varying shapes, mediums and sizes. This dynamic body of work truly gives China a taste of […]

Daniel Danger and Dan McCarthy will be debuting their latest show, “The Watcher in the Woods,” tonight at Gallery 1988SF. Taxali had the back room, and presented an energetic collection of illustrative work. Check out images of both, after the jump.

Kehinde Wiley Lecture @ Getty Center

In a little warm-up for his upcoming show at Roberts & Tilton, Kehinde Wiley gave a well-received lecture at the Getty Center last night.  He impressed the crowd as an eloquent speaker and accompanied his talk with some well prepared slides.  Especially interesting were his photo reference comparisons to his final paintings where he “street-cast” strangers off the street to pose for his paintings. Kehinde will be continuing his World Stage project with this exhibit, opening tomorrow night, April 4th.  After traveling to China and […]

Streets: D*Face

Originally thought to be an April Fool’s joke, United Kingdom street artist D*Face had the last laugh when he released a 20 pound sterling note remixed in his signature 80’s punk and skate inspired style on over ten digital billboards throughout the city in protest of the G-20 London Summit. Were the advertisements paid for or did D*Face hack into the computer systems controlling the billboards? A message on D*Face’s website reads: “No fools day. Where there’s a will there’s a way. Catch them before […]

Openings: Hush – “Veiled Beauty” @ FIFTY24SF

AM was on hand last night as Newcastle’s notorious Hush (interviewed) made his first Bay Area appearance at Upper Playground’s FIFTY24SF gallery. Following on the heels of his smash Carmichael show in Los Angeles last month (covered), Hush certainly came correct for his second solo showing stateside. Combining a couple cool outdoor pieces, some original canvases and murals, and a plethora of editioned prints, “Veiled Beauty” certainly offers a multi-faceted look at this artist’s range of production. The show, which was originally slated to be […]

It’s currently 7:15 pm in Sydney, Australia at the MTV Gallery where Ian Francis’ new exhibition (previewed) has just opened it’s doors to numerous excited Aussies ‘Down Unda.’ Since most of the world may not be able to attend the pop-up Semi-Permanent exhibition as our friends in the southern hemisphere, AM thought it would be nice to share an online viewing of Ian’s latest body of work. More images after the jump.

Joe Black creates photo realistic images via found mediums such as Legos and ball bearings. Can’t wait for the show to […]

Teaser: Jose Parla – “Reading Through Seeing” @ Ooi Botos Gallery (Hong Kong)

Oos Botos Gallery in Hong Kong will be hosting “Reading Through Seeing,” José Parlá’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong.  The show will open on May 14th and will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog with an essay by author and New York University scholar Alexandra Chang. At first glance, Parlá’s characteristic calligraphy meets graffiti, writing meets painting style seems like random strokes, albeit beautiful random strokes.  But, closer examination and understanding of his work reveals that his paintings are a journal of his […]
