Openings: Shepard Fairey x Hennessy – VS Cognac Bottle Launch (NYC)

Last week, we shared some photos with our readers of Shepard Fairey’s (featured) new mural in NYC for the L.I.S.A. Project. During his time in New York, he also hosted the official NYC launch of his signature design for this year’s Hennessy V.S Limited Edition artist bottle at ARENA. While there, Fairey was happy to share a drink with the Big Apple and drop some hotness as he spun a set along with DJ Mick. Take a look at more photos from the event below… Discuss Shepard […]

Streets: Shepard Fairey (New York)

Last week, Shepard Fairey (featured) visited New York City to show a little love for his fans in the Big Apple. Mr. Obey and his posse worked on a massive six story mural on Bowery just off of Broome as he took advantage of the Manhattan skyline with the help of the L.I.S.A. project. Entitled We Own The Future, this fresh creation took over three days to finish and we stopped by to document the process from beginning to end. Discuss Shepard Fairey here. Streets: DALeast (New York)

Out on the Lower East Side of New York, a new mural has taken form after some hard work by Chinese artist DALeast (interviewed). Featuring a beautiful image of a bird in flight (similar to a piece he painted in Hawaii last year), the wall painted with the South Africa-based artist’s signature kinetic style is the initial volley leading up to his solo opening on September 4th at Jonathan LeVine Gallery (557C West 23rd St. location). It looks as though the new body of work […]

Openings: “Cruel Summer” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Summer is the season where new art gets discovered as many group shows pop up when most of the art industry goes on vacation before things pick up again in September. Jonathan LeVine Gallery worked with renowned curator Roger Gastman to bring together a bold grouping of graffiti & urban artists both old and new. Entitled Cruel Summer, this great exhibition showcased a new level of work from each artist. There was some familiar imagery, but the work comes off fresh to attendees who were clamoring […]

Previews: Faile x BÄST – “Deluxx Fluxx Arcade” @ Edinburgh Arts Festival (Scotland)

Summer got you bored? Well Faile and Bast are at it again with their ongoing urban video arcade intervention exhibition – Deluxx Fluxx -this time making it to the Edinburgh Arts Festival. Unveiling August 1st, the Patrick’s & BÄST take their custom programmed & hand crafted arcade games back across the Atlantic for their first ever exhibition in Scotland. From games that challenged us to drop “coke” packages onto boats from a plane to dancing wolves grooving to skaters on a deserted island, even intricate pinball games – it seems that each […]

Openings: CRASH – “Broken English” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

One of the summer exhibitions that we checked out recently was by Bronx-based graffiti artist Crash, a.k.a. John Matos (featured) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Entitled Broken English this freshly minted body of work spanned traditional mediums such as canvas and paper, but also highlights Crash’s dexterity as a graffiti master as he worked his painterly street magic to redo a Mini Cooper in his signature style & visual language. This great exhibition will be up until July 26th, so if you’re in NYC, this is a must see. Photo credit: Joe Russo for Arrested Motion. […]

Openings: Anthony Lister – “Power Tripping” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

The many faces of Anthony Lister (art mutant, street vandal, superhero activist), turned up with a couple hundred handfuls of adoring fans for his latest solo show in NYC at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery, appropriately titled Power Tripping. If you are a fan of the Australian artist and his fairly constant parade of off-hand social shenanigans, then you’re in luck, as there were no shortage of them at this opening. There were more then a few costume changes throughout the course of the evening, including some social satire […]

Studio Visits: Faile – “Fuel, Fantasy, Freedom” @ Gallery Ernst Hilger

A month ago, AM stopped by the Brooklyn studio space of Faile to catch a glimpse of their upcoming show at Gallery Ernst Hilger which opens tomorrow, July 2nd in Austria. Entitled Fuel, Fantasy, Freedom, this fresh body of work continues to push the boundaries defined by the collective. The show focuses on the pure imaginative energy that comes from childhood fantasies – stories and themes such as racing stock cars and flying rocket ships to realms filled with unicorns and beasts. Diverse in technique and mediums, this […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Figure Drawings” @ Pace Prints

Ryan McGinness is back at Pace Prints after a seven year hiatus, but to say he’s been busy since would be an understatement. The New York-based artist, whose work stems primarily from skate and design culture has gone on to massive acclaim in that seven year stint, from further exploring his skate influences with the MOMA to his explosive show in the last days of Deitch Projects and let’s not forget all the projects in between. His latest solo show, humbly titled Figure Drawing, is way beyond just that, and without question continues to […]

Openings: “Art Truancy – Celebrating 20 Years of Juxtapoz Magazine” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

The year was 1994, Pulp Fiction was ruling the box office, The Beastie Boys were blasting Sabotage and a group of artists out in sunny California were brainstorming on how to start a Kustom Kulture magazine, that (unbeknownst to them) would eventually go on to be the most widely distributed and influential art magazine in the world. Famed painter Robert Williams (originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico) was riding a California wave, while collaborator, Fausto Vitello, was ripping with his Thrasher Magazine success, and with some key […]
