Volta ’11 – Mark Jenkins @ Carmichael Gallery

VOLTA was a fair during Armory Week that had each gallery bring a single artist to feature. LA’s Carmichael Gallery showcased the talents of street artist Mark Jenkins. The Family Room booth housed many great sculptures from Mark that had fair attendees constantly stopping with double takes when encountering his eye catching pieces. Check it out after the jump.

Streets: Ethos (Sao Paulo)

Claudio Ethos, whose surrealistic street mural in Paris we recently featured, has been busy doing more painting. The Brazilian artist certainly has a way of catching the eye with his play on proportions and his imaginative imagery.  This new piece was done in his home country in its largest city – Sao Paolo. Take a look at what else he has been up to on Unurth. Discuss Ethos here.

Update: Kelsey Brookes

Kelsey Brookes, who we last saw exhibit in Germany in November, recently posted up some images of his new work. After rehanging the whole studio, he decided to go in a darker more angry direction and frankly, we are liking what we see. Take a look at more of what he’s been up to – after the jump…

Videos: Jonathan Yeo – “Porn in the USA”

Remember back in July of last year, when Jonathan Yeo brought his series of works and portraits created from collaged pornography to Beverly Hills. It was part of a series of shows put on by Steve Lazarides in a temporary gallery and was entitled “Porn in the USA” (covered). Apparently, they were filming the whole time.  Take a look above as Yeo and Lazarides are interviewed – all with the backdrop of some nice behind-the-scenes footage.

Signings: José Parlá @ The Standard NY

Capping off an awesome Armory week opening at Bryce Wolkowitz, José Parlá & Standard New York held an intimate signing for the hometown fans. Held at the exclusive Boom Boom Room roof top lounge, fans enjoyed breathtaking views while they hung out at “José’s corner”. Mr. Parlá merrily greeted each supporter with the love and respect that we’ve come to expect from the humble artist. All who attended the signing were treated to a little calligraphic magic as José took time to personalize each book with […]

Preview: Scott Campbell – “Noblesse Oblige” @ OHWOW (LA)

Wielding a plethora of obscure media in clever ways, Scott Campbell is poised to provide an intriguing look at the transformation of the orthodox into the outrageous, all with a heavy dose of tattoo symbolism. Be it US Currency, ostrich eggs, black light neon tubing or copper plates, the cutting edge Brooklyn-based artist has transplanted the outsiders aesthetic typically exercised within the confines of his tattoo studio to the virgin gallery space of OHWOW’s new Los Angeles home. Serving as the inaugural exhibition at the ivy […]

Teasers: Bye Bye Kitty!!! @ Japan Society

While art fair hoping during Armory Week ’11, we bumped into artist and friend Akino Kondoh, who luckily clued us into Bye Bye Kitty!!!, a fantastic exhibition of 16 contemporary Japanese artists opening today at New York’s Japan Society. Curated by David Elliott, founding director of Tokyo’s Mori Art Museum, Bye Bye Kitty!!! attempts to move beyond the stereotypical idea of cute and anime-inspired Japanese art, by showing paintings, objects, photographs, videos and installations that meld traditional styles with challenging visions of Japan’s present and […]

Augustine Kofie, Jerry Inscoe, Remi/Rough and Scott Sueme were recently brought together for Unintended Calculations, an exhibition well curated by Indigo at Becker Galleries in Vancouver. Check out more shots from the gallery after the jump, […]

Signings: Marcel Dzama @ David Zwirner

AM recently got to attend a book signing at the David Zwirner gallery and catch Marcel Dzama’s book signing session. Held on a sunday afternoon, we caught up with Marcel as he graciously spoke and signed books for those that attended. Marcel also took some time to draw a beautiful little sketch for fans who patiently waited in a two hour queue. For those who haven’t seen pics from his current show at the New York gallery, take a look here. More photos from the […]
