Jasper Wong from POW! WOW! recently joined forces with Fred Bidwell from Transformer Station as curatorial team for the INTER|URBAN public arts program 2016. This original project is working on transforming Cleveland’s public transit rail system into a large-scale public art experience. Through artwork that can be enjoyed on their commute, this program seeks to challenge public transit riders emotionally and intellectually, while making physical and cultural connections to their surroundings. With the annual event in Hawaii expanding into SXSW this year and Taiwan last year, the POW! WOW! festival will finally hit the west coast on June 21-28. POW! WOW! Long Beach will feature a week of exhibitions, film screenings, talks and of course public murals. Last Saturday night, Soze Gallery in Los Angeles opened a group exhibition that highlighted the form of the Modernica chair, seen through the lens of each participant’s artistic vision. Friends and artists who show with the gallery, created custom one of a kind versions of the chair with their signature styles and techniques with part of the proceeds going to benefit The Art Of Elysium, a non-profit organization that brings empowering artistic programs to children in the local hospitals in the area. Last week, the first POW! WOW! Taiwan wrapped up successfully as invited artists finished public works throughout the capital city of Taipei. Another interesting exhibition that occured during Art Basel Week was entitled Most Oddinism located at The Rotunda, just a block from a number of fairs such as Miami Projects, Art Miami & Context in Miami’s Downtown district. This group show featured the works by many familiar artists you’ve seen here at AM including Aaron De La Cruz, Christopher Derek Bruno, Ben Eine, Kenji Hirata Anthony Lister, Otto Zitko, Patrick Martinez (seen above), ESPO and Roid. Another exhibition to visit while in town for Art Basel Week in Miami is Most Oddinism, a group exhibition exploring the work of eight artists that got their start in the streets. Running from December 4th to 8th, the show will include Aaron De La Cruz, Christopher Derek Bruno, Ben Eine, Kenji Hirata, Otto Zitko, Patrick Martinez, Steve Powers, and Roid (seen above).
