Ai WeiWei – “Forever Bicycles” @ Brooklyn Museum

As we’re in the middle of summer, we thought to bring you a closer look at a key installation from Ai Weiwei’s “According To What” exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum (covered). Entitled Forever Bicycles, this massive installation consists of hundreds of bicycles welded together to create a formidable sculpture. Utilizing one of the key modes of transportation of Chinese people to showcase his artwork, Ai Weiwei’s creation takes up the ground level rotunda of the museum. Having traveled to museums & prominent locations such as Taiwan (covered), […]

Ai Weiwei – “Leg Gun” Meme

Chinese artist & activist Ai Weiwei once again showed his acumen at utilizing social media to get his message across with the recent online craze that has been labeled by some as the “Leg Gun” meme. AWW set things off by posting a photo of himself on his Instagram account using his leg as a gun and has since posted more of himself as well as others mimicking the pose with their own variations and styles. So what is his message? The Guardian pointed out the similarities […]

Releases: Ai Weiwei Monograph

German publisher Taschen is soon releasing the first comprehensive monograph on Ai Weiwei’s life and work. The conceptual multidisciplinary artist’s work exceeds the limitations and borders of the art world. He has become equally, if not even more known as a social media phenomenon, and his political activism became a symbol of free expression in his native China. With this release, Taschen gives us a comprehensive view of the artist’s life and work, made in close collaboration with the artist himself, on site in his studio through a direct access to his […]

Openings: Ai WeiWei – “According to What?” @ Brooklyn Museum

Continuing on its North American tour, Ai WeiWei’s traveling exhibition According to What? recently opened at the Brooklyn Museum. The show consists of more than 40 works, including large scale installations, photography and sculpture, which together portray Ai’s range as artist and activist. Several of the installations are created by collecting or assembling many of one type of object, such as backpacks, crabs, bicycles, pearls or rebar, to highlight the tension between an individual and a society, especially one as populous as China. And for […]

Openings: Ai Weiwei – “Evidence” @ Martin Gropius-Bau

Ai Weiwei’s largest show to date, Evidence, has just opened at Martin Gropius-Bau, Berlin. The exhibition features new works that have been specifically designed for the exhibition or have never been shown in Germany. The show references some of the artist’s most well-known work, and his widely known experiences as an activist. Though he was unable to attend in person (his passport was confiscated by the Chinese government), the artist addressed the audience in video where he expressed his hopes to see the exhibition. As […]

Previews: “Brooklyn Artists Ball” @ Brooklyn Museum

The art world wouldn’t be where it is without some of the fine institutions that showcase art year round for the public to enjoy. Every year, we look forward to a special benefit held annually at the Brooklyn Museum. The Brooklyn Artists Ball is a tradition for us here at AM, and it looks again to continue to celebrate the great art that is in New York City. This year, on April 16th, they honor especially Jenny Holzer (seen above), Ai Weiwei and Kehinde Wiley. Like last […]

Rewind: Dec 23 – Mar 7

It’s been a while since our last Rewind feature so it’s time we introduce some videos to you. You may remember last month when we shared the #WithSyria campaign that launched on March 13, the third year anniversary of the conflict and resulting death & destruction in the country. If you remember, Banksy lent his famous “Girl With Red Balloon” iamge to the cause, but there was also a video produced that can be seen below as well as on the #WithSyria website. Other worthy […]

Kickstarter: A Secretly Filmed Sci-Fi Starring Ai Weiwei

An interesting project surfaced a couple days ago when it was announced that there was a secret short film starring Ai Weiwei in his acting debut. The dystopian sci-fi, written and directed by Jason Wishnow (the filmmaker behind “TED Talks”), made on the down low in China, features the dissident artist as a smuggler in a world without water. Overcoming many obstacles, all the footage has been shot (by Christopher Doyle no less), but help is still needed for production costs, visual effects, sound design, music, mix, color […]

Releases: Shepard Fairey – “Ai Weiwei” Print

It looks like Shepard Fairey (featured) has created a new print as a tribute to Ai Weiwei ahead of the Chinese artist’s show opening soon at the Brooklyn Museum. The portrait is created with Shep’s signature style and features a gash on the activist-artist’s scalp alluding to his time in the Chinese police’s hands back in 2010. As a result of that incident, AWW’s passport was confiscated and he has been unable to travel, including to show openings like the upcoming one in New York. The edition is created […]

Discuss Ai Weiwei here.
