Armory Week ’10: Scope New York

We attended the preview of Scope New York last Wednesday and visited the fair again on Saturday, and with the exception of stand-out booths by Anonymous, David B. Smith and newcomers Jackie Paper, found the fair to be somewhat disappointing overall. The show seemed small, not just relative to the enormous size of this year’s Armory Show, but compared with this year’s Scope Miami or last year’s Scope NY. And the overall selection and quality seemed to be down as well, with not a lot [...]

Preview: David B. Smith Gallery @ Scope NY 2010

Another must see fair during Armory Week is Scope New York, which always has an impressive list of galleries from around the world showing cutting-edge emerging artists. One such gallery is our mile-high friends from David B. Smith Gallery, who were nice enough to give us a sneak peak at what they’ll be showing this year, including stunning pieces by Gregory Euclide, Christina Empedocles, Jason Theilke, Kristen Schiele and Jud Bergeron. The VIP preview for Scope NY 2010 opens later today, and AM will certainly [...]

Openings: “Beach Blanket Bingo” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

AM recently attended the festive opening of Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s summer group show, entitled Beach Blanket Bingo. Chilling and chatting by the inflatable palm oases with a cold Pabst Blue Ribbon was a fun way to appreciate works by the over thirty participating artists, including Matt Haber, Seonna Hong, Elbow Toe, Richard Colman and Ron English. Check out the images after the jump for a selection of our favorites.

Teaser: “Beach Blanket Bingo – A Summer Mixer” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

A pretty impressive group show is being assembled at Jonathan Levine Gallery entitled “Beach Blanket Bingo – A Summer Mixer,” set to open on August 5th.  An appropriate name for the show as there definitely seems to be a eclectic “mix” of artists including Ana Bagayan (featured), Glenn Barr, Ray Caesar, Dave Cooper, David Ellis, Ron English (studio visit), Natalia Fabia (interviewed), Korin Faught, AJ Fosik, Logan Hicks (interviewed), Seonna Hong, Anthony Lister (interviewed), Jack Long, Cleon Peterson, Scott Radke (interviewed), SKINNER, ELBOW-TOE (interviewed), Adam [...]

Openings: AJ Fosik and Greg Gossel @ Shooting Gallery and White Walls

AM visited San Francisco institutions The Shooting Gallery and White Walls on Saturday to catch some photos of AJ Fosik’s (previewed) and Greg Gossel’s (interviewed) respective shows a couple hours before their dual openings.  AJ’s show, “There’s Aliens in our Midst,” featured a dozen new wood 3D constructions (most of them being the flamboyantly colored totem-like trophy heads that AJ has become known for as of late) as well as an installation of golden ratio proportions featuring a severed totem animal body strewn upon a cleft pyramid. [...]

Setup: AJ Fosik and Greg Gossel @ Shooting Gallery and White Walls

AM swung by White Walls and The Shooting Gallery yesterday to say hi to AJ Fosik and Greg Gossel (interviewed) who are both busy installing their new solo shows in preparation for tonight’s opening. The pieces in both galleries looked absolutely stunning, so be sure to check back for our full recap. More exclusive setup pictures after the jump.

Andrew Schoultz & AJ Fosik @ Space 1026

Andrew Schoultz and AJ Fosik opened up a pretty amazing show full of complex installations last weekend at Space 1026 in Philadelphia. We have never really envisioned their work interacting but the kinetic energy of Schoultz’s frenzied imagery blends nicely with the sculpts of Fosik’s beasts and folklore – perhaps it’s the complementary color palettes. Not to mention, the cryptic letterings of Fosik combines with Schoultz’s penchant for incorporating the symbolism of U.S. currency to form a body of work that hints of conspiracies and [...]

Openings: Family First @ White Walls

The first great group show of 2009 went down last weekend at White Walls SF. Usually group shows are headlined by a few established artists and a bunch of lesser knowns, but “Family First” (previewed) featured a large and diverse group of great artists like Ian Francis, Andrew Schoultz, Richard Colman, Sylvia Ji, Shepard Fairey, Shawn Barber, Jim Houser, Mike Giant, Adam Flores, and AJ Fosik just to name a few… Be sure you stop by for a look if you haven’t already…you don’t see [...]
