Preview: Travis Louie – “Tiny Theatre of The Absurd” @ Stranger Factory

Starting on September 6th, the Stranger Factory in Albuquerque will be hosting a two person show entitled Tiny Theatre of The Absurd from Travis Louie’s (interviewed) and Jean Labourdette a.k.a. Turf One. For his part, Louie will be contributing some small pieces and some mixed media works on paper featuring his black & white portraits, rendered like vintage photos, of imaginary creatures and human oddities. Showing: Chet Zar & Doktor A – “Oddfellows” @ Stranger Factory

Currently showing at the Stranger Factory in Albuquerque is a dual exhibition from Chet Zar (interviewed) and Doktor A entitled Oddfellows. Aptly named for the strange artistic vision, the joint show from the two features Zar’s grotesque and monstrous portraits painted in a nightmarish fashion that only he can do as well as the Dok’s steampunk mechanical creations put together by his deft hand. Preview: Scott Radke – “Interface” @ Stranger Factory

This Friday (April 5th) in Albuquerque, the Stranger Factory will be exhibiting all new works from Scott Radke (interviewed). Entitled Interface, the new sculptures from the Cleveland-based artist will feature the distinctive use of burlap and clay for his surreal and anthropomorphized renditions of animals. Along with all original sculpts, there will also be some customized skelves – all featuring his eerily expressive faces. For those interested, Radke will be showing alongside Kathie Olivas and Stephen Webb. Discuss Scott Radke here.

Those in Albuquerque, New Mexico tonight need to head over to Stranger Factory to check out Travis Louie’s (interviewed) newest solo show. Entitled Spirits, the new body of work features a menagerie of strange and wonderful creatures including some of the supernatural persuasion. In particular, we love the piece above – The Spirit of the Cyclo-Sasquatch – the NY-based painter’s interpretation of the mythical creature based loosely on the Patterson footage. Upcoming: Travis Louie – “Spirits” @ Stranger Factory

Continuing to spread his strange creatures and special form of surreal vintage portraiture to unlikely locales, Travis Louie’s (interviewed) next solo will be in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We last covered the NY-based painter’s showing in Northampton, Massachusetts at William Baczek Fine Arts back in May, and now it looks like his black and white cast of bizarre characters will be headlining a show at the Stranger Factory in August entitled Spirits.
