Remember those wonderful sketchbook pieces from Andrew Hem’s (interviewed) we previously wrote about that showed at the San Diego Contemporary Art Fair? Now, there are pics from a recent trip Andrew took to Brazil that give you a better understanding of the process behind the work. Our friend Amanda recently posted up an image of Andrew Hem’s (interviewed) sketchbooks, scattered gloriously about with pages open revealing this and that. In essence, these gouache “sketches” are mini-paintings and a selection will be available from LeBasse Projects at next month’s Art San Diego Contemporary Art Fair. As a whole, the work is a summary of Andrew’s many travels as he stops occasionally to paint a scene that impressed him for one reason or another. Via Erratic Phenomena. Discuss Andrew Hem here.

The cool thing about the “Annual Summer Invitational” at Jonathan LeVine Gallery is that we get to see some fresh faces that haven’t had an opportunity to grace the gallery walls before. Summer is usually a time to relax for the art world, but the crew Jonathan LeVine Gallery is hard at work putting together their “Annual Summer Invitational” roster. The group show, which opens August 4th, will host a slew of artists new to the gallery such as Nicoletta Ceccoli, Tran Nguyen, Alex McLeod, Andrew Hem, Becca Midwood, Evol, Judith Supine, Lola, Morgan Slade, Marco Mazzoni, Nate Frizzell, Oliver Warden and Oscar de las Flores. AM recently swung by San Fran’s Japantown to check out the opening of LeBasse Projects weekend pop up gallery. The four day show highlights several members of LeBasse’s roster, artists like Yoskay Yamamoto (featured), Nate Frizell (featured) and Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) were all on hand to celebrate the opening. Additionally, Beau stepped up his game with a couple curve balls for SF residents, debuting some new pieces by internationally renowned artists Herakut (interviewed), Seonna Hong and Alexandros Vasmoulakis. You may remember us posting some photos from Melissa Haslam’s studio a while back. Andrew Hem (interviewed) is opening an expansive show tonight at LeBasse Projects featuring paintings, drawings, and sculptural work. Entitled “One Leads to Another,” the exhibition was influenced extensively by his recent trip to Cambodia. Through his artwork, Andrew asks what if the millions of people that died during the Khmer Rouge period, especially the children had lived on instead? How might things have been different? Openings: Hi-Fructose Group Show – “Overdose” @ Copro Gallery

“Overdose” (previewed) opened this past Saturday at Copro Gallery in Santa Monica. Upon entering the gallery, you will notice several great pieces from “Overdose” on display in the gallery’s front room. The majority of the exhibition’s body of work is displayed in the gallery’s main room. A table was set up over in the smaller wing of the gallery for the Hi-Fructose Collected Edition 1 book signing.
