Openings: A New Sculpturalism @ MOCA Geffen

Opening last week at MOCA’s Geffen location was A New Sculpturalism, a show that examines the work of thirty-eight major and emerging practices in contemporary Los Angeles architecture of the past twenty-five years. Well-known legends represented in the show include Frank Gehry, Thom Mayne, and Eric Owen Moss, while younger architects, such as Elena Manferdini (Atelier Manferdini), Marcelo Spina and Georgina Huljich (P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S), and Tom Wiscombe (Tom Wiscombe Design) show off their abilities with three full-scale built projects, or pavilions. Videos: New Adobe Campus

For artists out there who read AM or those in the design field, Adobe is definitely a company they are familiar with for their series of computer programs including Photoshop and Illustrator. Rapt Studio, who designed the interiors, recently invited artists in to the Adobe campus in Lehi, Utah to do installations and murals including a piece from El Mac that we recently featured. Do Ho Suh – “Fallen Star” for UCSD’s Stuart Collection

Tomorrow in San Diego, Do Ho Suh’s Fallen Star finally opens at UCSD’s Jacobs Hall at the Jacobs School of Engineering. The project from the famed Korean sculptor, which is the 18th permanent sculpture commissioned by UCSD’s Stuart Collection, has been seven years in the making and was funded by $1.3 million in private donations. Ai Weiwei x Herzog & de Meuron Serpentine Pavilion Complete

Recently, the 12th commissioned architectural project of an annual series from the Serpentine Gallery opened to the public. The 2012 piece was a collaboration between famous Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and Herzog & de Meuron, the same team that was responsible for the celebrated Beijing National Stadium which was built for the 2008 Olympic Games. Anish Kapoor – “ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower” Completed

Anish Kapoor’s (with help from structural designer Cecil Balmond) twisting tower next to the Olympic stadium in London that we first mentioned last year has been completed ahead of the summer games for 2012. Dubbed the “ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower” due to steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, the chairman of ArcelorMittal, investing £19.6 million in the £22.7 million project, the 114.5 metres tall looping sculpture will dominate the skyline as UK’s tallest structure and feature two observation floors, a 455-step spiral staircase, an elevator, and a restaurant. SFMOMA Expansion by snøhetta

Last year, we mentioned briefly that the SFMOMA was looking for an architect to design their expansion project. It looks like not only have they found the firm for the job, snøhetta, the museum is also well into their planning stages for the large adjacent exhibition and educational space with a roofline that will be sculpted to frame the skyline of the surrounding buildings. As promised, here are photos from the Ferrari x Marco Brambilla’s party that we attended earlier this week at Art Basel Week Miami. The centerpiece was the collaborative 3-D video installation from Brambilla entitled RPM (see the video here) that entertained guests from the worlds of art, fashion, design and music.
