Recap: Sam Falls @ Eva Presenhuber (M Building – Miami)

As we gear up for the coming festivities of Art Basel Miami 2014, let’s look back at one of the impressive exhibitions held at the M Building by Galerie Eva Presenhuber during last year’s week of art madness. Artist Sam Falls had an excellent solo exhibition in which he showcased his multifaceted talents, ranging from his rope dye paintings and sculptures to his large scale lattice works that spanned the entire length of the M Building’s double height ceilings. It was an awesome display of […]

Streets: 2501 x Pastel – “Mirrorless” Project (Miami)

Recently, we received final photos & video footage of an independent project that took place in Wynwood, Miami, during Art Basel Week last year. Initiated by the artists 2501 and Pastel, the Mirrorless project involves three crucial subjects – artist, home and people, that are actually the key elements of works through their interaction with the elements of the installation. By creating and installing artworks and mirror surfaces around four different buildings, the Italian-Argentinian art duo played with simple optical illusions that were created. The artists got their inspiration […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Rubell Family Collection – “28 Chinese”

While down in Miami for Art Basel Week, we took the opportunity to check out 28 Chinese, the current exhibition at the Rubell Family Collection. As the name implies, the show consisted of paintings, photographs, sculptures and videos by 28 contemporary Chinese artists which were acquired by the Rubells’ during multiple visits to China between 2001 and 2012. Although a few of the artists included, such as Ai Weiwei, are very well known, others had never before shown their work in the United States. The exhibition […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: The Still House Group – “Straight II DVD”

One of the booths we were excited to see at the NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance) art fair during Art Basel Week was by New York Collective The Still House Group. Interestingly enough when we arrived, all we found was a cryptic Xerox copy machine asking us to press the button. Upon following the directive, we received a photocopy of directions to the middle of South Beach where the group was holding a substantial group exhibition entitled Straight II DVD. This very stimulating showcase brought together a selection […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Audrey Kawasaki for Thinkspace @ SCOPE

Just like earlier last year for SCOPE during Basel Week Switzerland (covered), the Thinkspace Gallery booth in Miami was also featured a mini-solo show from Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed). Included in the new body of work were her familiar exquisite portraiture of seductively innocent girls, with her technique taking advantage of the wood grain in each piece. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Audrey Kawasaki here.

Basel Week Miami ’13: Daniel Arsham – “Future Relic”

One of the launch events during Art Basel Week was Future Relic by Daniel Arsham (seen above with artist DRx Romanelli). Presented by OHWOW Gallery, this event served to debut a collaborative film starring Daniel with fashion designer Richard Chai and features Ben Louis Nicholas as the director of photography and music created by Swiss Beats. This mysterious film draws visual language cues from Lawrence of Arabia and part one (seen below) sets up a journey where Arsham’s “future relics” are found. More parts of the film will […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Vanessa Beecroft x Kanye West @ Mana Wynwood

During Art Basel Week, Vanessa Beecroft x Kanye West took part in the Affordable Care group show (covered here) curated by Flaunt Magazine in Miami’s Mana Wynwood Complex. This unique project pulled together two controversial artists (Beecroft & West) that have long drawn curiosity and criticism in their careers. Vanessa Beecroft, an accomplished peformance artist often utilizes live female models (often nude) as well as the audience and their genuine/awkward interactions to illustrate political, historical or social themes in the context of the location. Kanye of […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Art Basel First Look (Part II)

The “main fair” as it is affectionately called by art lovers in Miami is of course the centerpiece of Art Basel Week. Not just prestigious by namesake or by the list of illustrious galleries, but more so the high level of art exhibited by the artists who want to put forward their best work. As always, it felte like there was so much blue-chip goodness, but so little time at Art Basel. From Kapoor (seen above), Colen, Martin, De Kooning, Chamberlain, Pruitt, Houseago, Creed, Auerbach, Kusama to Longo, just to […]
